Absolutely brilliant. As good as I'm sure it sounded to wherever you were listening to it. Every player in this team grafts 100%. Everyone has decent quality on the ball. Every one of the midfielders and front players has goals in them. It's an outstanding side and I think Josh Brownhill, Lloyd Isgrove and even potentially Alfie Mawson will come to regret leaving or not signing. This team can genuinely go all the way, there's just so many goals in it. We are able to compete successfully in this league with a 4-4-2 because the two central midfielders do the work of three. Hourihane was just everywhere tonight, absolutely immense, tackling, getting the ball to feet, finding passes, as usual his dead ball play was top quality, just the complete midfielder. I think we will see a substantial offer in January even despite his contract running out in the summer as I think someone won't want to leave it to chance to pick him up. This team is built around him now. It's a tough ask playing three games in a week when they work so hard to get the ball back, and I wouldn't be surprised if we have to use Morsey at some stage on Saturday. Hourihane especially was out on his feet at the end of the game. To be fair in the first half we were only marginally the better side, although we were the ones with the better quality in key areas, and carved out better chances, Winnall especially had two glorious openings and he barely made contact on either occasion. They had two very good openings but both were gifted to them, from mistakes by McDonald and Davies. Other than that they struggled to create much whereas we were a constant threat, Winnall and Armstrong linked really well but on a few occasions our finish was lacking. They also had one spell around the hour mark where they got on top a bit - but apart from that I would say we controlled the whole game. Obviously the last 20 were a bit special. Davies: 6 - Very little to do in terms of saves, fluffed one kick which nearly cost a goal and also allowed a direct corner to sail over him and hit the inside of a post and run back across his line, all in the first five minutes. Underemployed otherwise Yiadom - 8 - Composed on the ball, really good going forward, and looks at home at this level in this environment. Just another example where we have good pace all over the field. White - 7. Solid, composed, proper footballer. The usual McDonald - 7. Looked like he had a mistake in him early doors and nearly cost us a goal with a misplaced pass, but grew into the game and was proper solid after that. Roberts - 9. Immense. Won everything in the air. Never outpaced or beaten. Their strikers never looked a threat even in the good ten minute spell they had in the second half Hourihane - 10. One of the top 10 performances I have ever seen in a Barnsley shirt. Seriously. I haven't even had a drink. Absolutely immense. This bloke has become the complete midfielder. Scowen - 8. Standard Josh ball winning tackling dominant midfield performance. Kent - 7. Plays in flashes, enigmatic, but pacey and was more direct at times, getting a good couple of shots on goal in. Plenty of work too. Hamill - 8. Went a bit quiet in the second half until he came up with a great goal, but he's always working for the team, trying stuff, and took a booking deliberately on a dangerous breakaway - he's playing with his brain. Winnall - 6. Great link up play with Armstrong and tireless working, but I have to dock a couple for missing three golden chances. That's Sam though I guess - and he's always in position for the next one. Armstrong 7 - Pace, movement, control, directness. A superb acquisition. Tired a bit and was changed at the right time. Subs: Watkins - 8. Very unlucky not to start and gave us something else when he came on. 70 minutes trying to play Armstrong's pace in stifling, stuffy conditions and then this guy comes on who will not give you a minutes peace. No wonder they fell apart at the back in the last 15. Bradshaw - 7. Not quite the impact of Watkins on the game but not far off - and got a goal. Pleased for him Janko - 9. LOL. Touched the ball about four times, one brilliant goal, one assist and one that was almost an assist but somehow they deflected Conor's shot onto the post.
Tyketical Masterstroke in serious match report shocker. Enjoyable read, but I much preferred it when you were shagging your next door neighbour.
Would have given Davies a 7, kept a clean sheet and made some good saves to keep us in it before we scored but other than that can't agree more (only my opinion)
I've not long got back to Belper from a very enjoyable evening! For me Yiadom had an excellent game and I can't see Bree getting back in the team when he's fit again. As you said Roberts was immense but I feel I must give special praise to McDonald. Yes, in the first few minutes he misplaced a pass that nearly let them in but he got better and better as the game progressed. By the second half he was flying. Some of his interceptions were superb. Because of his appearance a few fans sat near me said "well done Robbo" a few times when in fact it was Angus. I guess there's a big compliment in there somewhere! He's played just three games for us, and we've won them all. Davies had a bit of a stuttering first half. Some of his kicking was poor but he made a good save at what I think was 0-0. Hammill frustrated me for much of the evening to be honest, and I was wanting him subbed for Watkins before the goals started! Hourihane was just superb. He's on track to be spoken of in the same way as we think of Glavin, Redfearn and Hignett, and I don't say that lightly. His goal and assists return over the past two and a bit seasons is insane, and now he can tackle too ;-) Kent's end product still needs a bit of work, and Janko's cameo was entertaining! Sam had a bit of a frustrating night, but I do like the look of Armstrong. He's really quick and tricky. It was great to see Marley come on and sort Wolves out. By the end of the game Wolves were destroyed. 18 goals in 7 games. Mental.
