    Shocking, isn't it.

Those that think our country should just do nothing should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. Doing nothing, our hospitals will be far worse than that. How can anybody have such a lack of empathy?

I've been seeing videos and images like that on social media for weeks. I haven't posted any on here, because I knew the ostriches would berate it as 'just social media'.

It's absolutely terrifying. It's nothing like the flu, this is much more serious. The only strategy that will work is a complete lockdown, a complete suppression approach until a vaccine is developed, coupled with Universal Basic Income or a significant restructuring of Universal Credit so that people can afford to not work if they are not a key worker or able to work from home.

Take everything you see on the news, social media and any other non-academic channel with a pinch of salt. Especially the likes of Sky News and people who claim they've had texts from "mates" in the military, NHS etc.

    Oh look, an ostrich!

It's a ******* video that shows exactly what is happening in a real hospital. There are messages on twitter from ACTUAL DOCTORS, not from idiots claiming their mate's dogs, boyfriend's owner's friend is a doctor. Actual doctors, dealing with this right now, that are saying the UK are sleepwalking into something significantly worse than what's happening in Italy.

You keep burying your head though.

It's the worst hit hospital in the entire world, and I've no doubt it's horrendous there - it certainly looks bad on the video. Using words like "apocalypse" and phrases like "killer pandemic" and "out of control" is just not on though. I highly doubt people would have panic bought if the media hadn't ramped up the fear, and asking people to live in a state of constant panic and stress is ridiculous and will only make things worse than they are.

I think you need to separate Sky News from folk hearing stories from their mates dog walker or Facebook.

Time we ditched the "it'll never happen to us mentality".

At the current rate of increase, total UK deaths will hit 20,000 around Good Friday and we will be burying 3-4 thousand per day. By the end of April, its around 2.5 million dead. But we might have herd immunity for anyone that recovers.

Taken myself of my social media outlets for the foresee-able (I've enough **** to cope with in real life).
Best I saw last week was from an "it's just a common cold"(er):
"It's the money men that's doing it".
    "For what purpose" someone replied:
"No idea but it'll come out in the future"
    :)

Italy today..... Every single Radio and TV station at 11am united and played Italian National anthem followed by three well known Italian sing-along songs e.g. 'Volare'. They had announce this yesterday this and encouraged all the 'balcony dwellers' and as many people as possible to open their windows and blast it out. Yet another initiative to boost morale and get people pulling together. It may do nothing to stop the virus but it does appear to unite the people.

I am not sure how many participated herethough as we are 2km from the village and our nearest neighbour is a couple of hundred metres away and 10 minutes before the the start the area had a major power failure and we only got it back on after several hours . We went into the garden with the Smartphone radio App using 4G. Imagine all the kids stuck at home, no Playstation, TV, radio, internet, or video  .

As regards posts about Sky broadcasting the horrendous situation, and whilst not making light of it, Lombardia is the epicentre of the Italian outbreak and where the vast majority of confirmed cases and deaths is occurring. Not having seen the reports I have no idea if they were sensationalising it i.e. implying the whole of Italy is in a similar predicament. If not fair enough. However, here in central Italy, the situation is serious but nowhere near as bad as the North and medical faclities are excellent. Our comune has not had a single case (yet!) and the nearest Comune to us also have none. The others surrounding us have 2, 3 and 5 and another nearby also has no cases. The lockdown, by and large is being respected. Most of the very light traffic is the tractors of the farmers as now is a busy time for them.

The South is possibly in between the critical situation in the North and the less critical situation here in Central Italy since the original lockdown in the North was leaked and many people with obviously some infecetd 'fled' South before the stations in major cities like Milan were locked down. Combine that with the fact the South is under-resourced and things could get critical down their in spite of far less population density. Another 8-10 days or so should tell us whether the lockdown is having the desired effect.

Not really. That shows that after 8 days there is a 32% difference in the number of deaths. Italy is now on day 27 with 3405 deaths. If the 32% difference continues thats roughly 1000 higher than UK
Obviously not accurate but shows that the paths aren't the same

We got our first death 14 days after Italy. 8 days in they had 29 deaths. We had eight less deaths at 21. Not that big of a difference and the big sweeping changes today by the government means they are probably expecting a huge spike in the coming weeks.

It is worrying but we must avoid scaremongering and try to ensure that the media reports events with a sense of perspective.

That's a 32% difference after 8 days which is a big difference if that trend continues and it's a big if
