They all make such a big thing about being anti English (as we saw in the FA Cup at Wembley) but they’re still desperate to play in the EFL.
Yeah exactly, let's all start 100 more threads like this, about em lol. In fact no, let's talk about Sheff Wensdy instead ehh.
Strange one for me as I too are fed up of hearing about them, I do wish them well it’s Roy of the Rovers stuff and let’s be honest when we were taken over by Chien and Co a majority hoped for new stands, better team and competition at a higher level? Whether Reynolds and other bloke who I’d never heard of before see it out or get bored remains to be seen. Wrexham we’re always a league team through my growing up but there are others look at Scunny, whether they should be allowed in the Football league, can’t see that changing but a lot are anti English but that’s only Banter innit? PS hope Cardiff drop and Rotherham beat em when they play the re-arranged game
One of the incarnations of Merthyr Tydfil FC used to play in the football league back in the 1930s. I think that they are still in the English pyramid. I once saw them play Didcot Town, When The Railwaymen were briefly in the Southern League Premier Division.
I had an old VHS of fa cup goals one year in the late 80s/early 90s and Merthyr Tydfil were definitely on it. I remember because of the name. I've just checked and the club was liquidated in 2010 and reformed as Merthyr Town. They play in the Southern League and are away at Weston Super Mare today.
I saw Merthyr Tydfil play at Gloucester City a few times in the 80s and 90s and they always brought a decent following. It was a sort of local derby even though the two are 60 miles apart. There was quite a bit of needle on the pitch and the terraces as well. Strange people, football fans!
Is there only me then...that.enjoyed that...presented in a light fashion, bit of a p/take and seems to be doing its job, of getting Wrexham noted. If comments on here, regardless of whether they are negative or not, are anything, to go by, then they are raising the clubs profile ....well done to who ever came up with the idea .... A very good piece of marketing in my opinion
Merthyr Tydfill were useless on Championship Manager 1993 for the Amiga. If you took over Wycombe Wanderers from Martin O Neil, you couldn't fail to get them into the Football League with Jason Cousins at CB.
Apparently Forest Green were rivals to Gloucester City too, along with Cheltenham, Hereford and Worcester. Merthyr is miles away from Gloucester (80) so they’re clutching there. It seems they like a good scrap! I do feel for Gloucester though, they’ve been at Conference North/South level since 2009 I believe. Talk about long-suffering fans, that must get boring. Not to mention the ground shares etc.
No also enjoyed it and also enjoyed the documentary series. Must admit I do keep an eye of how they are doing this season. Its quite the story from a club (and area) that was on its knees
Yeah, it’s a fairytale really. Paying League One players League One wages in the National League. Elliot Lee is on three times what he was on at Luton, three levels lower down. Paul Mullin would be most League One clubs’ highest earner. Ask Michael Duff. They took Ben Tozer off him by paying him four times the salary. He didn’t want to leave. But quadrupling a salary leaves you no choice. I’ve absolutely no issue with Wrexham or their owners and it’s superb for a fanbase who’ve endured nothing but misery for decades. But there’s an unfair narrative surrounding it. And I can understand why some are fed up of hearing about them. But in my line of work, that’s terrific marketing. If the ownership retains its enthusiasm etc, they’ll be in the Championship in a couple of years. But then it will become much more difficult to outspend everyone.
Yes FGR were also rivals but often not in the same section of the Southern League despite being close neighbours. Cheltenham were above them mostly so rarely played them. The ground situation for City was a huge problem. They sold Horton Road to Beazer Homes in exchange for a new ground next to the River Severn which, obviously, ended badly once the flooding became a regular thing. The pitch was often under water and one year the water almost rose as high as the cross bar! Thus began a period of homelessness with the club having to play at Moreton-in-Marsh for a while. I never really understood why their close neighbours didn’t help out but, by this time, I had moved away from Gloucester so lost touch with their news. It was a pity that a bit more thought didn’t go into that relocation to Meadow Park. It was a very smart little ground but clearly in the wrong place.
I can't wait for our next match with the mighty Caernarfon Taarn. And apparently they haven't forgot or forgiven us for whacking them in the Fa cup.
It’s a nice story and Wrexham fans deserve something after years of strife. The way that they have worked off field to give differently able people access to home and away games is tremendous. On field yeah it’s not a fairytale but it’s a great story.
thanks ST but who is he guy right at the end of the video 2.15 - sort of puts the mockers on things !
