Superb TV and at the same time heart breaking. I always knew Jack was a man of the people from his time at Hillsborough when he lived in Worsbrough. He'd often talk about fishing whilst having a pint in the Red Lion and as I've said before, he donated to miners benefits. However, I never really knew how.much the Irish loved him and how bad his dementia got. An enlightening documentary worthy of the great man.

I bumped him to him in Filey
What a lovely genuine guy who wanted to converse with you.
After an hour speaking with him can't ever forget his humour when he said next time your in Birdwell can you ask them for my freezer I loaned them for the women against pit closures back.
I've gone through a box of tissues watching that documentary ,and on reflection if Bobby was a sir then Jack should be God.
Achieved so much more than his brother.
Sadly too with the Owls but top respect to Jack.
    What a ******* legend.

Watched it too... had to reach for the JD. Had the pleasure to meet him a few times on account of their Pete going to our school. Very down to earth imo.

It was excellent. Was mentioned in the prog how scary it must be trapped in that horrible disease not knowing who's your friends and family. My dad had dementia, he would ask me where I was working, how the reds had gone on, about 10 times in a 30 minute visit. But he new who I was and was still smiling. Didn't see him in person since August. Was going to going to say goodbye on the Monday in Nov at bdgh but he had passed away in the early hours. Really rubbish to see someone slip away.
It was a good watch but also difficult.

A really interesting programme. Not without flaws like all of us, but you can tell he had a good heart and achieved so much both as a player and manager.

My Uncle Colin got dementia early. My Dad (brother) went to visit him to start with but it got too much. There were flashes of the old person in there though right until the end. During his flashes he said " I don't want to be here anymore. I wish it would end".

There was no point talking about the present. I used to ask him about when he was young and he'd remember who he was at school with, where he 1st worked, when he opened batting for darfield, no problem. Then he'd ask where are you working again!

Yeah my Dad and uncle used to play for Ryhill Cricket Club and watch the Reds together back in the late seventies into the eighties. They used to talk about the past too.

He seemed very single minded and stuck to his principles. Our current coach is similar I think. We have some good footballers, but we get the ball up front quickly and don't mess around at the back. Some of our play in the final third is as good as any of the so called "ball playing sides".

I agree. It's rare we put in consecutive "bad performances" we might have consecutive defeats but that will ultimately be because we weren't good enough on the day.

I think other sides have now sussed us. Bournemouth managed to score, keeper rode his luck but we came back stronger 2nd half. Blackburn nearly got it right but didn't capitalise on 2 or 3 good balls in behind. Wednesday was a game too far maybe.

When his parents visited they used to go in Barrow WMC, his dad in the tap room and his mother in the concert room for a game of bingo. I think they thought the Red Lion was too posh for them :D

I also remember bumping into him on holiday with the family in Filey as a kid of about 7 or 8 and getting his autograph.
Came across then as a really nice, down to earth fella.

Many years ago, my then fiancée & I went to the Strafford Arms in Stainborough. Margaret found a table whilst I went to the bar for our drinks. When I returned, there were two older couples sat at the same table. A lady said to the man with his back to me "This will be her boyfriend". The man's friend laughed and said to him "Be careful, Jack. He's bigger than you". The man stood up and turned round, it was Jack Charlton. I put our drinks down and shook his hand, saying "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr Charlton". Jack, who was the manager of Sheffield Wednesday at the time, was taken aback with my calling him Mister. His wife said "This is why we love love living in the Barnsley area. Everyone is so polite and friendly.".
Jack and his wife were the personification of what they claimed Barnsley folk were like. That didn't change even when I pointed out to Jack I was a Barnsley season ticket holder!:)
