Sir Alex Ferguson. Yep, I didn’t pick it up. He left a lovely voicemail though saying how great a man my Dad was. He said he would call back but hasn’t as yet. (He called off a withheld number). Im actually glad I didn’t speak to him. I have now got that voicemail forever and my 3 kids and my brother have been able to listen to it. Absolutely class though from him.
i can still see your dad and Sir Alex walking across Oakwell deep in conversation at his testimonial game.It was testimony to your dad the "stars" on show that night.
He's a top bloke is Sir Alex, people didn't like him because he was a single minded winner but behind that it seems he's got a heart of gold. What a lovely thing to get in touch, obviously thought a lot about Eric.
Ferguson strikes me as being a great bloke. I've got zero love for Manchester United, and less than zero love for the Barnsley plastics who 'support' them, but Ferguson has long had a reputation for doing things out of the goodness of his heart. Many a new Football League manager said they took calls from him, wishing them well, and telling them he's available if they need any advice, or just want to talk. Terry's post only confirms that Ferguson is a giant among men. Fair play.
Fergie like ur old man are from a different class of football people. The people from the very tip of the pyramid. Clough, Shanks, Paisley, Graham Taylor. All knew everyone connected to the clubs and I dare say also knew thousands of fans by their first names. They probably knew quite a few of fans by nicknames they gave em at the training ground............I know thi dad did no sure about the others.
He used to wind me up when he was at Man Utd at times but at the end of the day it was only because he was totally committed to doing the best for his club. The way you hear other managers & people such as yourself talking about him makes you realise how much of a class act he is. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve heard other managers say he’s gone out of his way to help them.
It’s said that he’s always had a lot of time for Barnsley and some of that may be to do with the time his brother Martin spent at Oakwell.
I do as well, just so I can thank him for bringing his team to Oakwell for my old mans testimonial and to thank him for taking the time to call. I did know my Dad has been friends with him since the mid 60s but to see how much he meant to Sir Alex for him to take the time to call me is unbelievably humbling. He even knew my name and referenced it a few times in his 2 minute message.
Thats brilliant mate, good man Sir Alex, it's obviously lifted your family's spirits and you all deserve it.
