Wishing all my BBS friends all the best and hope you all have a great day on the other side of the wall. Enjoy your liquid refreshments.
Thanks for the good wishes, but just another mundane Monday for me. It’s not like our Govt. Encourage us to mark/ celebrate the day of our adopted middle eastern Saint by giving us an additional Bank Holiday is it?
It's pretty much a non event Tbh...no parties or booze ups, the only noticeable thing is that churches put the flag of St. George up for the day.
Perhaps they have Irish connections? Or just an excuse for a piss up. Personally don’t pay much attention to any of them.
I think that a lot of countries celebrate symbols of national identity because they often fought for many years through countless sacrifices to throw off rule by foreign powers. Whereas we tended to be the ones doing the ruling - most nation states are less than 300 years old, many less than 150 years, you could argue that England existed - legally and politically homogeneous enough to be recognised as such, from around the 12th Century.
Might celebrate it if they do then. I I remember the the Tories mooted about moving May Day to celebrate another day to Trafalgar day or something of that Ilk. Either have an additional day or don’t bother at all
Could have 4 more https://www.theguardian.com/politic...ore-bank-holidays-if-it-wins-general-election
So the burning question here is if all 4 of the Saints (George, Andrew, David, & Patrick) met for a good old p*ss up, who would win the traditional chucking out time shin kicking contest in the streets ?.
How did I know you would say that Ian lol. George would obviously whack David, and he'd then go on to meet either Andrew or Patrick in the Final.
St George is pretty much meaningless to most English people. He was made a saint because he's a Christian Martyr; he was killed for believing in Christ, yet England is probably the most secular society in the world. He never went to England and he'd probably never heard of the place. He was born and raised in Palestine to Greek parents and fought in the Roman army. If he existed at all. Maybe he did, but everything about him is myth and legend as there is no historical account of him. He's most famous for killing a dragon, an mythical creature that definitely didn't exist. He's the most pointless patron saint you could imagine. Probably didn't exist, definitely didn't do the things accredited to him, had absolutely nothing to do with our country and died for a religion that most of the population have turned their back on. Even if you are Christian, surely you've got better hallows than St George to venerate.
