The father of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson says he is applying for French citizenship now that Britain has severed ties with the European Union.

Stanley Johnson told France's RTL radio he had always seen himself as French as his mother was born in France.

poor beggars, can they say no?

He's always considered himself French yet for 80 years he's never bothered about French citizenship. Lo and behold on Brexit day he's decided that he's French after all. Nowt to do with wanting an EU passport then?

For 48 years he's had freedom of movement so didn't need the French passport.

Also he would still have freedom of movement but might have to queue a bit longer at EU passport control. He's just trying to avoid the queues that's all. Always thought he was french my ar5e.

He's an EU supporting man who has taken any step he can to remain in the EU. What's wrong with that?

I can't stand him in general but he's done nothing wrong here

Stanley Johnson is an old dinosaur and some of his views are quite bigoted but he’s always been very pro EU, he never agreed with his older son (his younger son left government when his brother became PM as he also didn’t back all of the craziness), so as much as I don’t like the guy and how he comes across, if the bloke had a French mother and identifies as an EU resident, I can’t see anything he’s doing wrong here.

There’s a lot of folk previously holding British passports in Northern Ireland applying for Irish ones now.

I would probably do the same if I had any option to. Though it wouldnt make that much difference to me in my world - I’m as ****** as everyone else. I’ve made it very clear my thoughts on Brexit, I’m yet to see any of the perceived ‘benefits’, a hell of a lot of the detriments though, and even though we left officially a year ago, it’s only just really starting from today.

Credit to him. It would be easier for him not to do it and shows he's got a mind of his own instead of just agreeing with his son.

When your stance on Brexit determines that you’ll stick up for a stag hunt supporting upper class twit it shows just how deep the divisions have become. We may have to abolish home and away at Oakwell and move to remain and Brexit. Who gets the Ponte?

Don’t think I ever said he’d done anything wrong (in this case, plenty in other things he’s done / said).

Stick up for him how? By saying that the decision of a pro EU man to maintain his EU citizenship is right?

Wow. We could just easily say ‘when your stance on Brexit determines that you’ll attack someone for being pro EU no matter what’.

Stanley Johnson is a dinosaur, a relic. He’s an upper class, toffee-nosed buffoon, very similar to their Alex in that regard. His views on the majority of things I will likely find abhorrent. I’ve no affinity to him whatsoever - though he’s no real threat, unlike his aforementioned son.

My point, and STs I think, is that he’s done nothing wrong at all in wanting to remain an EU citizen if his lineage allows for it, so I don’t see why you’d have a dig in the first place; but certainly why you’d post this in response to us pointing that out.
