A few classics on the players we’ve let go. It’s easy to forget their loss of form, or their bad games, when we’ve sold them for millions or they have moved on. Sure if I could be arsed there would be similar ones on most players we signed. Mawson/Roberts http://barnsleyfc.org.uk/threads/nyatanga-and-mawson.236791/ Watkins http://barnsleyfc.org.uk/threads/marley-watkins.236120/ Winnall/Hourihane http://barnsleyfc.org.uk/threads/winnall-and-hourihane.237009/ Sure there are plenty of other examples, but these opinions were from our time in League 1... Hopefully January will see the same upturn that we saw in January in both 2015 and 2016. When a squad of highly talented but inexperienced players were supplemented by a bit of experience and clicked. Big step up to the championship.
Crazy that Orsenkaht can say what he says there about Hourihane, Winnall and Watkins and then jump on me as being back out of order, brain dead and racist for saying Ugbo is ****.
My point is not to get personal about individuals. It is about the fact most of us, if not all of us, can prematurely judge players and it’s hard to see past poor form, or giving players the time and our support to be the best players they can be. But history has shown that perhaps give them the benefit of the doubt. Not all will be superstars. But a few who haven’t torn the championship will probably end up being very good players. I am definitely guilty of writing off a couple of players in the recent past. I hope I am proved as wrong as some were about those above.
Absolutely. He was terrible for a number of games, but was back to close to his best in the last match. A fully committed Andy Yiadom is a top asset to this club. If he doesn’t want to be here then I’d rather we cashed in.
http://barnsleyfc.org.uk/threads/spreadsheet-help.220013/ http://barnsleyfc.org.uk/threads/urgent-excel-97-help.223534/ Imagine that - some were critical about the spreadsheet being crap even when it had signed Winnall, Scowen, Hourihane and Mawson.
Good to hear. I can’t say the same for Moncur though. We could pay him off tomorrow for me and it would not be too soon. If we talk about time he’s had enough of it.
Imagine someone daring to have an opinion when it might have been used against them 3 years later. Much better not to have any.
Haha. Calm down dear. That’s exactly my point. We can all perhaps make hasty judgements. You decided to have a pop, like you regularly do. Having opinions is exactly what it’s about, but being open minded to the possibility your opinion may be wrong is refreshing. You have slagged off the “spreadsheet” even though it brought in the players you then slagged the club off for selling.
I didn’t have a pop, flower. Just asked you a question. I’ve slagged off the operation of the spreadsheet certainly in the latest batch. The recruitment smacked of someone over believing their own press (backed up by selling players that didn’t want to go) and insisting it be followed regardless of overall cost. I personally wasn’t surprised by that. The recruitment pool has gone backwards not forwards since the lot you referred to and now we are in a higher league. You’re quite right about opinions. They are a snapshot view of a moment in time. They can change over time. My opinion of the recruitment may well change. I don’t see any Conor Houriane 2015 version in terms of footballing ability in this latest batch.
Love that, @ocook. The archive is ace for embarrassing folk. All of us. But not me, on this occasion.
Best not to express any opinion of a point in time. Or rather keep posting that x player is the best ever and we miss him as when x player is released for nowt no one will regurgitate those posts.
Again. Not the point. Was merely suggesting that as football fans we can jump on poor form, slow settling in time, perhaps someone taking a season or two to show their true worth.
I’m wrong about nearly every player I’ve ever watched play. Except Wiseman. I knew instantly he was going to a more defensively sound version of Cafu. And he seemed a thoroughly decent bloke as well.
Of course it’s the point. No one will spend the time trawling back through the archives to tell someone who was saying x player was good enough when they get released for example. It may well take a season or two for some players to show their worth. That’s part of the problem we’ve created for ourselves. We have too many who might take that time and the same again who will take it and then still be nowhere near. I suppose it all depends on how you see relegation
You're on the defensive, and for no reason. It's a bit of fun. You can find hundreds of my posts that embarrass me. That's the point. That none of us are ever right. So you can whinge all you like about the plan being wrong, yada yada yada. I can blab on about how exciting it all is, yada yada yada. None of us know anything. It's the beauty of it. However... some folk are just plain idiotic. And threads like this illuminate it spectacularly.
Must not be idiotic then at least I don’t think any of your posts from the past are embarrassing; they are opinions of that moment in time.
Hindsight innit. None of us know anything much. Even me. Trust me. My favourite player is Brad Potts. Most folk can't stand him. So what do I know?
