I thought I didn't really care about the national team and I thought Southgate was entirely the wrong appointment but I'm far more positive and enthusiastic about it than I expected. I think it helps that we have a young, hungry squad and have finally binned Rooney off and hopefully waved goodbye to that generation of failure. I really hope we beat Colombia. It's far from an easy game but I reckon we will just edge it 2-1 and from there who knows?
Yeah we seem to be playing more like the under 21's, 20's, etc. and just enjoying our football and fighting.... If we beat Colombia (not a given by any means), I think we can do something special.
We have a decent chance of making the semi finals. If we meet Spain there I think we'll get beat. Still, that would be a good tournament for a young team.
I completely agree. For years I could not give a flying f**k about England. The 'golden generation ' under Sven, Capello et al completely killed it off for me. I didn't like many of the players and I didn't care for the managers either. That has completely changed under Southgate. I like him and I like a lot of the players. One in particular. Maybe it is the Stones effect but I'm back in love with the national team for the first time in years and it feels quite good.
Definitely agree. When Southgate was appointed I was very ‘meh’ but he’s changing my opinion a lot. I like the fact that our players are younger and want to play decent football with pacey attacks. The ex reds in the squad definitely helps too. Obviously there’s no easy game in a World Cup knockout round but I feel like it’s our best chance to get to a World Cup semi final in ages.
