It appears we deliberately allowed ourselves to be expelled. My understanding is that the FA were extremely surprised as it's 'unheard of'for clubs to neither appeal nor request a personal hearing. BARNSLEY'S OVERSIGHT RAISES EYEBROWS Barnsley’s failure to request a personal hearing after being charged with fielding an ineligible player in their FA Cup first-round replay against Horsham this month raised eyebrows at the FA. The League One club simply admitted the charge in a written response without taking the opportunity to defend themselves in person, and were kicked out of the competition as a result.
I would guess that we didn't want to spend money and time on contesting something where we were absolutely bang to rights. Its not as if we could've argued the player (Marsh) didn't affect the outcome as he got an assist to put us 2-0 up.
Maybe we've learned from when we paid hundreds of thousands in legal costs just to embarrass ourselves suing Hull over Angus Macdonald

Hundreds of thousands? Have train fares from Barnsley gone up that much? We didn't need legal representation. We just needed one of the Board to rock up and have a personal hearing.
So basically if a delegate from Barnsley had gone to a hearing and said what about Bradford and Chesterfield. The F.A fearful of the stigma of expelling a team from the cup would have ordered us to replay the game. It sparks as a bit of snobbery on our part. We don't want extra games in the F.A Cup or EFL trophy or League Cup. No effort at all in those comps. We'd have taken a lucrative tie in round 3 had we made it but not fussed. Poor attitude from the club. (Wouldn't surprise me if we're pumped at Blackpool tomorrow.)
While I wouldn't usually read anything published by The Daily Mail, I'm led to believe they have decent sports writers, and I can't imagine this is simply fabricated. Being only the second club to be kicked out of the competition in the last century clearly illustrates what a massive error this was (the situation happens dozens of times every year during the January Transfer Window/FA Cup 3rd round) and to not request a personal hearing, even if you believe you're guilty of the offence, is bizarre to me. A personal hearing isn't necessarily about trying to prove innocence, it can be about extenuating circumstances, or even, in this case, simply holding your hands up, apologising, acknowledging the authority of the FA, but enquiring if there might not be a better solution than expulsion, for both Horsham and us. The FA may not have thought so, but showing respect to the governing body and talking to them about a once in a 50 year f*** up could not have possibly hurt. I despair.
Its not fabricated bud, it was also on the BBC iirc a day or two after it actually happened, was mentioned on here. Not sure why daily mail are on reporting on it now.
Matt, the author, is a close mate from Uni. Known him 20 odd years. He hasn't made it up I can guarantee. Was at The Times and Evening Standard before the Mail.
The person who represented chesterfield could have been hired for less than 3k and I’m almost certain we would have at least had a replay If we had won the replay we were guaranteed at least 41k No logical reason why we didn’t at least fight the case
So according to Neerav this evening "we appealed" and "we didn't go back for an appeal", so that clears that up.
