But I've been racking my brain to remember when we've scored a similar goal. The last one (in fact, the only one) I can recall was scored by John MacDonald. He scored from a clearance by the Grimsby goalkeeper Nigel Batch, although I believe MacDonald was a bit further out. It was the only goal in a 1-0 victory back in February 1987. There may well have been others since, but my memory's not what it once was. Unfortunately, there's been a number scored against us in recent years. Radlinger & Collins have both committed this type of error in the current campaign. Adam Davies infamously did the same against Wednesday & Winnall back in April 2017 and likewise Luke Steele at Ipswich March 2012 in a 1-0 defeat.
I was there for the goal against Grimsby. Obviously Hendrie and Schmeichel at Old Trafford in 98 is another example.
That's one of Cauley's outstanding assets, he keeps his cool. A lot of players would have tried to blast it ( McGeehan springs to mind), but he knew he could sidefoot it with the right amount of pace and beat the retreating keeper and defenders run back towards their goal . Sadly although it's pleasing that we didn't lose, that was a game she could have and should have won.
The only one I can think of is Hendrie / Schmeichel but I’d imagine there’s others, there’s got to be with how many we’ve had against us surely
It's a wonder that the Ref didn't find something wrong with Super John's effort. Always remember Neville's crude tackle on Andy Liddle and the Ref turned a blind eye. Stonewall penalty but we got nothing.
I can remember an exact copy of the same goal happening in the same net a few year ago but for opposite sides, with Davies scuffing a clearance to Winnall who passed it into an empty net. And the rest they say is history.
The most similar one is the one by MacDonald v Grimsby back in 1987, the only other one I could remember coming from a goalkeeping howler was the one in the video from Bruce Dyer, about 1min 58s in. I think it was at home to Portsmouth in 2000/01, and the keeper was Russell Hoult?
If it went left, you’d want Mowatt on the end of it. If it went right, you’d want Woodrow. It went right (viewed from the Ponty) and bingo. Cool, calm, composed. Thanks Cauley.
