One of the worst names in retail history. Some of you will know what I’m on about. Even to this day I’m still perplexed by the idiocy of the name.
My old man had a shop in Monk Bretton, which he owned from about 1977-1995. They called it the above. Absolutely mental.
Yep, Fish Dam Lane. Went in loads of times and saw the big man himself on occasions! To be honest I thought at the time that it was good marketing to use a well-known Tarn name. It was probably the only reason I went in!
Never heard of it, but I'm proper chuckling at the name. Shop Easy... Sounds like something from The Streets Of San Francisco. "Witnesses say the shooter was still carrying his gun as he fled the Shop Easy." Had your Dad been on holiday to the States or summat?
On Fish Dam Lane, a few hundred yards from where my Nan had a bungalow on Heysham Green. Popped in a few times when she needed some shopping.
That's the first time I've heard about it, but I'm glad you shared it. Such a pity he didn't open a chain of them. It could have been huge. I'm just imagining now how awesome it would be if there was an "Eric Winstanley's Shop Easy" on the corner of every street in the land. And of course, an "Eric's Express" in airports and train stations.
I think it needs an online presence for a 2020 rebrand. I’ve checked and the Domain name is free @Terry Nutkins
For a short spell I worked in the bookies above it. A brief but fairly rich part of my overall education!
