Fairly indifferent but surely its something all clubs would just do anyway. I never knew it was compulsory either
why would a club do that, it must be a good source of revenue surely. Then there is the collectors market too.
I knew it was compulsory and can imagine that some clubs must lose money on it. I think it would be sad to see them go but it being compulsory seems wrong to me, I don’t see why clubs should be forced to have them.
As an avid collector I'd be gutted if they stopped printing them - still prefer books and magazines - find them hard to read on a screen
My son would be gutted. He’s obsessed with reading them at the moment. Save me a blooming fortune though.
I can'T make my mind up, last time I bought one probably had the league magazine thingy free with it! But I know lots of people still collect them and in a way it would be another tradition gone. Thing is they are (I think) too expensive now, maybe it may be an option to downgrade them from the glossy publications they have become these days?
For all the billions flowing into football these days, I think they should be kept compulsory. It's another football tradition and any losses must be pretty inconsequential to be honest.
I always bought one in the 70s partly because they were just nice to have (and relatively cheap), but also because they were useful for keeping track of players, especially opposition ones. No names on shirts in those days. The managers column made for an interesting read (for me as a teenager, at any rate) and the Benny Hill page provided an insight into stuff that I would otherwise have been ignorant of. I stopped buying them when the price outweighed the content, apart from a brief resurrection for the Prem season when I bought one every game, just as a keepsake. I didn't know they were compulsory, but in a way I'd be sad to see them disappear. Always makes me smile when I come across 70s reds programmes in junk shops and whatnot. Wish I'd kept them all now...
I can’t find the article now but it can be quite expensive for the smaller clubs having to produce and print X amount of programmes that go unsold. Obviously. to the higher leagues it’s not felt as badly if a loss is made but it can be quite a big factor for the really small clubs with low attendance figures.
for me it makes sense, they are expensive and generally full of info that you already know, hopefully it may give more power to the independent fanzine if fans still want something physical to read?
