Just got back from Sheffield after dropping my niece off for an operation at Thornbury hospital and then had to drive back past the University and other hospitals and navigate kamikaze roundabout at top of hill from Kelham island.
What a feckin journey. I swear if God chose to give the world an enema, Sheffield is where he would shove the tube !!!!

I did my degree at Sheffield from 92-95, right in the middle of Supertram construction. Commuting from home in Barnsley was an absolute pain in the @rse. Used to take about 50mins to an hour to travel from Hillsborough to Ecclesall Road and I think during that period they tunnelled under Brook Hill roundabout. And from my lecture room window, and when I was in my lecture room, or on clinical placement at the Royal Hallamshire, I could see Bramall Lane every bloody day, just to rub it in.

I was a regular visitor to The Childrens Hospital at one point but now my visits are mainly to the Decathlon sports shop. I can't say the round-a-bout is a problem provided you put your brain as well as your car in gear. You just have to make sure that when you commit yourself to go you go.
I have always found the St Mary's one more of a problem.

If you can handle the Dodworth crossroads (near library) everything else is a doddle, even the Birdwell roundabout!

take the A61 Grenoside - Hillsborough (that ruin that needs a coat of paint!) - Walkley Lane - over the top and pick up Mancheser Road for Thornbury.

Only know that way for getting to Claremont hospital, but I suppose it's not too far away, just I'm not familiar with it.
    Thanks

Used to do that roundabout pretty much every day when I lived in Sheffield. I think it's generally an ok city for driving in - far easier than Manchester, Nottingham or Leeds. Having said that, the number of excellent pubs in Sheffield means my first task upon arriving is usually to get the car dumped wherever I'm staying and get supping.
