Im aware from recent posts that we have some Horse Racing enthusiasts... dare I say experts on here, that I would really like some help from. Ive been going to Donny races for the last 7 years now on the ladies day (the thursday) and will be doing so again next week. Thing is, over the 7 years ive remarkably managed not to win one penny whilst betting on every race, not a sniff (Usually stick a tenner on the nose in each race on one horse) So much so im now firmly the object of riddicule amongst the gang I go with and even more annoying is the most vociferous of these are wednesday fans. I know Orsenkaht has tried to help in the past but even his tips failed to break my curse. I know bugger all about horse racing, so next week if anybody on here has any ideas for each race on the Thursday then please reply and ill be very grateful for any help you can give me, I know its a bit of a lottery but Im sure having more knowledge than I have would help in choosing a horse that could break my duck. Thanks in advance. Would dearly love to stick it to the piggies. COYR
No expert by a long chalk. I used to go to Donny on work outings. And used to give my mate my money. £5 per race to put with his and let him pick . Used to come out in front or break even. He's a piggie lol. I also found this worked for me. When I used to go on the annual outing with my sunday football team mates. Betting without the favourite. (I dont know if bookies on the course still do that) So would go for a name I liked in the betting of the top 4. If it came 1st or second I would collect winnings of half the odds.
I'll have a look next Wednesday for you and tell you what I think if I remember to do it. If a few people send you suggestions you might be able to spot a trend....cant have you losing to the owls!
Go to the pre ring and parade ring and see which owners turn up, Arabs coming in a helicopter is also a good sign.
I always rate Kevin Ryan as a trainer with decent price winners. He trains locally at Hambleton and is sure to have a few runners on Thursday. His record at the track is good so if you’re looking for one or two EW bets, he may be the trainer to consider. O’Meara/ Tudhope combination is on form at the moment as well
Buy the Daily Mirror and.bet on Newsboys tips. He usually has at least one winner at a meeting. You may have 6 losers but that one winner makes all the difference
If you know nothing about horse racing and few of the mugs who gamble actually do, even though they think they do, you are better off keeping your money or spending it over the bar. They do some nice pies at Donny even if they are over priced at £5.
For Saturday rather than Thursday, but I'd find it hard to look past Continuous in the St Leger itself. It beat Gregory by nearly five lengths at York and while Gregory is three pounds better off with that rival I find it hard to see him reversing the form. Continuous was very strong at the finish and should see out the Leger trip. Moreover, he has a round-looking action which suggests softer ground should be no problem (he has won on soft). That Gregory is favourite over the O'Brien horse is puzzling to me, so I'd say Continuous must represent a bit of value at 100/30 this morning, especially as the race may cut up further.
So, the final declarations are out for Thursday! In the 2.25 Dragon Leader should take all the beating. He took the equivalent race at York's Ebor meeting by four and a half lengths and looks to have something in hand of this field. He is only 9/4 best in a field of eighteen two-year-olds but he looks to have a big class edge here. In the 3.00 (May Hill Stakes) Darnation looks to hold the best chance on the form of her wins at Thirsk (by ten lengths) and Goodwood (Group 3 race ). She holds Hard To Resist on that last run and should appreciate going up to a mile here. She is also 9/4. Not much use if you're going, but I wouldn't touch the other races with a bargepole! They are all close-knit races with little between the runners and with the added complication of likely rain-softened ground. Others may have views on those races but I'm ducking them!
Weather makes things tricky this week and racing is very competitive on all 4 days, In the Leger Chesspiece around 20/1 is a relentless galloper who has been prepared for the race all season, He may get outpaced at the business end of the race but will give you a good run for your money and goes on most ground.
Not a festival I usually do well betting at. It's got the least quality of all the festivals I feel. Horses running for their corn now.
It's a fantastic racing track, but I have to agree that York's Ebor meeting is beginning to make Donny look like the poor relation. The marquees on the far side block the view of the back straight for four furlongs. The overgrown trees around the bends at the bottom take out another chunk that the naked eye can see. So you can only see the races on the straight course in their entirety. The rest you have to watch on the big screen. You're as well watching on TV at home. Add to that the catering facilities are cheap and poor offerings, and the car parking situation is abysmal. The prices of drinks would make The Botanist blush. I've been to many St Leger festivals over the years, but I'm afraid the on-course experience is pretty dismal these days. Happily the racing is still pretty good, but not in the same league as York due to the much better prize money on offer at The Knavesmire.
Yo! Well I've perused the Donny card for Thursday and my picks for each race are as follows 1. Antiphon 2. Chic Colombine 3. Johannes Brahms 4. Romanova 5. Divine Jewel 6. Maximilian Caesar now Burglar is non-runner (although I think the jockey is clueless) 7. El Jasor 8. Mafnood The ones I think have the best chance are Chic Colombine and Johannes Brahms. The ground looks as though it is drying out and I suspect it will be just about good by off time so there shouldnt be any donkeys coming home I wouldnt think. Also, Im assuming you'll be betting in every race as thats what many people do if theyre at the track. If so, don't bet more than you can afford to lose and dont get greedy. If any of your picks are big prices I'd also suggest putting a place bet on the tote as well as the win (I'd be doing win and place on Antiphon myself). Good luck matey Edit: I dont think I'll actually be having a bet myself. Just be watching on telly
