Bambo wasn't done for using performance enhancing drugs though was he?

He was done on negligence. It was a similar situation to that of Paddy Kenny.

Don’t know then, thought he was and his defence was not knowing it was in what he took.
Ie the drug found was classed as a performance enhancing one

I believe it was a banned substance, but not necessarily performance enhancing. Not 100% though.

The whole thing is a bit odd though. Mike Phenix (remember him) got 4 years at the same time as someone in the PL got 6 months for testing positive for the same substance. The longest ban in world football, for a non league player.

    What rule has Diaby broken?
The specific rule is E1(b) of Regulation 3 of the FA's anti-doping regulations for 2019/20, which, in layman's terms, means he provided a urine sample after a game against Blackburn Rovers on 23 November, 2019, that contained a substance banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

    The substance was Higenamine.

    What is Higenamine?
It's a naturally-occurring chemical compound found in several plant species and it is widely used in dietary supplements for its fat-burning properties.

It is classified by WADA as a Beta-2 Agonist, a class of drugs that cause muscle relaxation and are commonly used to treat asthma. WADA bans them because they have been abused by athletes and body-builders as performance-enhancers.

Higenamine, however, is a controversial drug in anti-doping circles as it has many different names and can be difficult to identify in a supplement's ingredients.

In 2017, UK Anti-Doping was one of several national agencies to warn athletes about Higenamine after a spate of cases in Australia, while Crystal Palace defender Mamadou Sakho is trying to sue WADA for £13 million after his positive test in 2016.

His ban ruled him out of a Europa League final with Liverpool and the European Championships with France but was later overturned when his lawyers were able to argue there had been no negligence as Higenamine was not specifically named on WADA's list.

Why did Diaby accept the charge?
Diaby had no real choice but to accept it once it was established the sample had been properly collected, transported and tested.

His only option was to try to reduce or avoid the ban entirely by proving he had shown no negligence or significant negligence in taking the substance.

To do this an athlete usually needs to demonstrate that a legal supplement they were taking, and had checked with a doctor, was contaminated, or that the relevant ingredient was not listed.

Beyond saying that he had been using Strepsils for a sore throat, Diaby had no explanation for the positive. He insists he's innocent and didn't intentionally take a banned substance.

The Athletic understands he settled before the hearing to avoid a potential four-year ban.

Not an expert on it, but would have thought weight loss enhancers would come under performance though surely?
