What did he implement in his time at Oakwell. A Charlton supporting contact is asking me and apart from HoF and Daryl Dike I couldn't think
I thought Dane was fantastic for us, our recruitment under him on the whole was good and undoubtedly he moved us forwards.
I thought he had a really slow start and initially didn't get the communication part right. But as he found his feet, it's probably no coincidence that we had our most successful recent period under him and it fell away spectacularly after his dreadfully engineered departure. It feels like he was one of the few people we've had in charge who understood you have to match recruitment to what the head coach actually wants and needs for the style they are playing.
We introduced the HOF in the summer of 2018. The CEO was Gauthier Ganaye, another great bloke. Dike was signed by Dane. As were Andersen, Collins, Oduor, Chaplin, Sollbauer, Helik, Kane, Britain, Kitching and Morris amongst many others. He appointed Struber and Ismaël. His ability to relate to and liaise with the first team yet also run the rest of the club (in trying times too) was commendable. I can’t speak for you or others on his ability as a CEO. He was roundly given pelters for lots of his time in situ. Particularly early on. He isn’t one for cameras or publicity. We had to convince him of the merits of being seen, to let the fans see the Dane we saw every day. I think eventually supporters saw what we did. For those who worked under him, he offered clarity, transparency, and a feeling of being a part of something special. To be fair, GG had already created a similar environment so it was a seamless transition. Dane didn’t bark orders, he didn’t have cliques. He trusted each department to do their jobs and people thrived under him. From bottom of the league, fighting to survive through a pandemic, to a best finish in 20 years. It’s also no coincidence - to my mind - that he was at the helm of Forest when they went from bottom of the league to the top flight a year later or whatever. With the connections he has, and a good manager in Jones, I’d expect that to confirm safety at least for Charlton.
Dane was a likeable fresh ideas man.Unfortunatley when he joined us he was given dogs abuse. His nationality,Yanks don't know owt about football,he was a yes man ,only come here to get thier lass a job,etc etc.If you think you've given Maladen a bad ride its been nothing to what Dane had to endure. Looking at the signings brought in not one as I remember was accepted without major criticism. The praise came as the club developed them.
Ah a CEO that was open and transparent, since Dane we’ve had one that was let’s say economical with the truth allegedly and one that’s totally anonymous.
The CEO who was in charge during our most successful seasons in modern times. Unfortunately, we've only gone downhill since he left.
Why oh why couldn’t we get him back here? Of all the Conway cockups getting rid of Dane was his biggest
Remember "BS" Ben,? the treatment he recieved was shocking. Its not a new game attacking backroom staff at Oakwell its a regular occurence.
My Charlton supporting mate asked me about him, to which the first two words of my response was "superb appointment". Very interesting reading YT's thoughts, having worked alongside him, and it highlights how far backwards we went when Conway decided he could do 'a better job' as CEO. If I recall correctly, at the time we signed Dike, Conway was pushing to sign a certain Obbi Oulare instead. Dane got his man, thankfully, but it turns out it was only a temporary delay until Conway's pet project came to the club on an extortionate salary. Thinking back, I was probably one of those being vocal about Murphy's lack of visible profile in his early tenure, but he ultimately demonstrated the benefits of having a football man as CEO, as he utilised his knowledge and contacts to deliver one of the best seasons the club has achieved. The scale of the achievement in finishing in the Championship play-offs has only grown by what we've seen subsequent to that, the seeds of which were planted by Conway's "best transfer window ever" in the pre-season that followed it. Good luck in the new role, Dane. I'm sure he will be a success at Charlton.
Should have been back here instead of the waste of space we've got in the job now. He pointed out that Conway and Chinlee were pillocking us.
Ben Mansford won people over though. He ended up earning a lot of respect. Can Sormaz do the same? Highly unlikely I’d say. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if he does.
I never understand why people write off charisma when in a public facing role, the majority of people are scared stiff of public speaking, which must have something to do with it. Obbi Oulare currently unemployed according to wiki, so there’s a chance we could see him back here next season.
Wasn't it Dane who mentioned Conmans position to the others. And instigated the takeover by the present board. ?
