Satellite launch rocket "lost".... https://www.theguardian.com/science/2023/jan/10/uk-rocket-launch-failure-virgin-orbit-second-mission Funniest bit is they were planning to celebrate with "Cornish Sparkling wine" which is still on ice. I was in hysterics reading this...
Happy to mock the rocket failure. But we are producing some very good champagne quality sparkling wine, a very successful brand at Camel Valley in Cornwall, and also Chapeldown in Kent. (done vineyard tours at both and highly recommend)
Spaceport Cornwall! They've only just got electricity in Cornwall, lovely part of the world, but, quaintly backward.
In the real world it used to be a very busy RAF Station called St Mawgan, with Nimrods flying out of there. On many occasions in an RAF career you would get a choice of next posting and would be invited to nominate three places. St Mawgan usually appeared somewhere on most people's lists. I can't think what the attraction was myself - Cornish beaches, decent weather, lots of young single female holiday makers throughout the summer seasons. Why would your average airman be interested in any of that?? PS - I never managed to get down there...
Our eldest lad just completed 13yrs in the Royal navy fleet Air arm at Culdrose, the appeal of Cornwall soon diminished and he always said its probably the most backward county in England.
I think a lot of people fancied two or three years in Cornwall just for the novelty of being by the seaside during your off duty times. I'm sure, as you say, the novelty would have worn off after a while but maybe it was still an attractive option for many.
