2 words. Recency bias. Same as all this nonsense about Messi being the best ever. He was and is fantastic don’t get me wrong. But this incessant “GOAT” stuff is ridiculous and boring.
It was a brilliant World Cup. It had upsets, lots of goals, penalty shoot out drama, one of the greatest finals of all time. It’s a shame it was in Qatar but there’s no point kidding ourselves. It was a fantastic tournament. Best of my lifetime for sure. Granted there’s only 7 I’ve properly watched but I think it’s clearly the best of the last 25 years.
The Messi and Argentina loving especially by the media has been sickly. Would the Argentina press be this way about us if we had won it? Of course not.
But for a lot of people, he is. Even before the world cup. Especially the younger ones. Only comparable to Maradona
We don't have a player like Messi though. The reason there's a love in is because it gets millions and millions of clicks from around the world, social media is where all the money is
The best thing about the world cup for me was the sensible operation of VAR and the correct totting up stoppage time. Lessons to be learnt for our domestic football.
5 Things I know about the Olympic games in Berlin: Jesse Owens' 4 gold medals and Hitler. Although if Hitler hadn't gone off the rails a few years later I might be struggling for a 5th because there was nothing he did at the event that is worthy of note. What is worthy of note was the performance of Jesse Owens. That his achievements took place in a country governed by the Nazi party does not diminish them in any way. See where I'm going with this?
Many teams gave the Nazi salute during the opening ceremony, the British team being one of the few that didn’t. The whole thing was a huge propaganda coup for the Nazis, helped legitimise them in the eyes of the international community and strengthened their grip domestically- so a triumph for them and a disaster for the world - the original sports washing.
Same with F1. You can put up a decent argument to say Lewis Hamilton was probably the best driver over the last 15 years or so but GOAT is daft. Too many variables and changing skill sets to argue that LH is greater than Fangio, Clark etc. Physicality due to G forces and complexity of managing settings in the modern era whilst driving at 200mph vs the sheer 'balls' needed to drive the 'death traps' that cars ( and circuits) were in the decades leading up to the modern era where safety is priority. Tennis is the same with Roger Federer compared to the Rod Laver and Kenny Rosewall era wooden rackets Vs larger ultra light modern racquets.
I think it was massively over hyped. The Messi thing was nauseating. The way commentators only focussed on individual players was annoying and disrespectful. To be honest I lost interest when England got knocked out. I’ve heard several stories of “all expenses paid” trips for people to shed a positive spin on the tournament.
yeah a lot of the social media support is pretty standard suspicious looking stuff too IMHO. That atmosphere was very ordinary in at most games too, and empty seats at a World Cup Final? Too many people willing to forget what went before on the back of some decent games of football methinks!
Surely the only people who are saying the Qatar World Cup was the best are the ones too young to have seen the World Cup in 1982?
That happened with athletics coverage a long time ago. I lost interest because between track races they used to cut to field events- discus, shot, high jump and long jump. That ended when they started to focus on celebrity track athletes with build up, profiles, post race interviews etc. Most athletes may as well not exist as far as TV coverage is concerned
Poor from the Brentford fans singing you let your Country down to Kane ! He’s our record scorer ffs, hope it doesn’t continue
