Sometime way back in the sixties my mate and myself went down by train to watch the reds in a monday night away match at Reading ( Elm Park in those days ). I can't even remember the outcome of the match , either 0-0 or we lost 1-0. After the game we had to get from Reading back in to London to catch the midnight train from St Pancras to Sheffield. In those days that train was also known as the ' paper train ' which meant it called at every station between London and Sheffield dropping off that days newspapers, as a result it took over 4 1/2 hours arriving back is Sheffield just before 5 o'clock When we were on the platform at St Pancras we spotted and got chatting to one of players who had played that night. That player was Bob Earnshaw who played for Barnsley on a part-time basis because he was also a school teacher in Rotherham. We all finished up in the same compartment for the journey back. As we were all back at work that same day (Bob told us he had to be back in school for 8.30) we all did our best to get some sleep before we got to Sheffield. My claim to fame therefore is that i once slept with a Barnsley Player.
