    On another laptop --

switch on - swirling small circle of dots appear - (message) Preparing Automatic Repairs - press Enter - Blue screen appears - (message) 'Choose keyboard layout.'

Then c/o Enter and get -- 6 Advanced Options -
Start-up Repairs, Command programmes, Uninstall Updates, Systems Restore, Settings, Systems .

Whichever option I choose nothing happens. I can't access the desk top.

Is the laptop knacked ? Thanks.

Pour Coca Cola down it and claim it on the insurance.

Prepare a windows repair usb for your laptop on another pc, whichever operating system you have. Buy some coke while you wait.

Its been too long since my desktop support days, but it looks like the latest updates have buggered Windows.

If you have nothing on it you care about, blat it and reinstall the OS.

If you have stuff on you want/need, download a bootable Linux distro on DVD/Flash drive and copy off everything you need first.

Other options may be available that aren't as drastic.

Have you ever done a Windows back up? Mine updated last week & everything is fine.

The problem is I can't get into the laptop to do anything - can't even see the Desktop The answer may well be the Coco Cola!

It does sound like your Windows installation is knackered.

If you do as Scoff suggests and boot from a USB stick with some LINUX variant (such as Ubuntu) you won't be running windows but will be able to access the laptop's hard drive and copy your data off onto another USB storage device. You can then wipe the hard drive, reinstall windows and copy back your data. You'll also have to reinstall any apps you had etc.

I'm having issues following the latest windows update. Fortunately my keyboard is working and I've been able to roll back to the point before the update was installed.

*UPDATE* Rolling back to the last recovery point has done the trick.
