Is it as straight forward to change utility companies as the comparison sites claim or is there any hidden pit falls.?
Always check the actual providers site after you’ve got a best one from the comparison site I’ve just switched to Avro energy, their rate direct was cheaper than what was offered on u switch and the others. the “saving” the comparison sites offer is only against the standard rate which no one is on so check the rates closely The process is easy all you do is provide reading ms when asked. They do all the legwork
1. Check you are not in a contract with your current supplier otherwise you may have to pay an exit fee. 2. Go through a cashback site first (e.g. Quidco). Either go to them direct through Quidco or use a comparison site through Quidco. I changed in November using Quidco’s comparison site and got £40 cashback. 3. Check which supplier MSE expert says is the current cheapest. Obviously check that it is in your case but I find it normally is the best one for me. Then get that one through a cashback site. 4. If you have a smart meter, if it’s the original type they aren’t always supported by different suppliers so it may become ‘dumb’ again. Some supplies insist you get a smart meter if you don’t already have one so check that too.
I routinely switch every year, usually using several comparison sites. I've NEVER had a switch go wrong. This year I went with Bulb, even though they weren't quite the cheapest one, because I like their flexibility and the way they do things. They pay your exit fees (within 30 minutes of sending them the final bill from my old supplier), you can set your own payment amount and get paid for referring new customers. For example, I've dropped my dual fuel payment amount to £30 this month to use £75 worth of referral credit. www.bulb.me/steveg4874
Check the price per Kw and the standings charges. You only switch if the new supplier is lower than your current one. Otherwise it’s a piece of piss.
I go through Confused.com every year or at least when I know my tariff is due to end. It's really easy and I usually end up picking the cheapest. I don't have any loyalty with any company. I do the same with my car insurance and usually change providers every year.
Make sure you click through a cashback site to get to Confused.com each time whenever you get any type of insurance or energy. It’s literally free money (normally minimum £20 a time).
You need to be careful doing this, often the rate is cheaper on the merchants website that negates the payment. Don’t get me wrong I’d always check, I got business insurance from axa this year for £85 and Quidco have be £65 cash back, winner!
I've not switched suppliers for a good few years( laziness mostly), but I would suggest that your meter readings are up to date and that your current balance isn't showing as overly in debt or in credit( too many companies are reported as being slow in paying back credit and you don't want a nasty high bill when you leave if you're in debt).
Have a look at the Money saving expert cheap energy club. You enter your details and then it monitors the market, alerts you when switching will save you cash, then handles the switch on your behalf. Been using it a few years now, it's very convenient indeed.
