Maybe they are playing the way they do because they don't think there is any other choice at the minute? The team has played like this since the big 'un took charge, so it seems obvious that he is instructing them to do it. But I don't think he is playing this way because it's his preferred style, but rather he sees the squad isn't good enough at the minute to play exactly how he wants. I mean, there is one thing for certain, it's made us competitive at this level for the first time in a long time, we're trying to play attractive football had left us struggling in previous seasons. I'm hoping that our play becomes less and less "long" and "aimless", like it pretty is much at the minute, and more a measured and clinical direct style as the squad both matures and is added to.
Must surely be some stuff out there on the net about how he got his previous side to play tactically.
This is how I see it, apologies for repeating what I’ve said in previous threads, but it is very relevant here. it’s a case of reaching the points safety target ASAP. Then having a bigger remainder of the season left as possible to look at the whole squad. VI has changed our style considerably from his predecessor and to be fair points-wise so far it’s working. Here’s hoping for a comfortable mid- table finish and a head coach that has a bigger and better picture of what his current squad is or isn’t capable of. Going to be a very interesting summer especially if there’s some semblance of normality with the COVID situation
I'm happy if we stay up - I'm not bothered if we boot the ball into orbit in order to do so. It's Barnsley. People who are expecting us to win, whilst playing beautiful football, in a division of financial cheats, whilst not cheating financially ourselves, are never going to get what they wish for.
When his name was first mentioned, the formation he likes to play, that we've played in every game, 3-4-3, was also written about. I read it a few times and then we did line up exactly as predicted. I didn't read anything that examined the style of play beyond that though. However, his own reference to vertical football does suggest he likes to get the ball forward quickly. The tactic we adopted from kick offs, simply booting it into the stand, also suggests it's the area of the pitch we want the ball to be in that's most important to the point where we're happy to relinquish possession to be there.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with hoofing the ball up in the air,,,,,,, the problem is the coming down bit. For the tactic to be successful, surely we’ve got to have the players to get hold of the ball when it does.
According to Hughton , there was a strong wind behind us second half and he thought we didn't adapt to that and the pitch conditions
