The Guardian: Southend sack Chris Powell in bid to stave off relegation to League Two. https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...-in-bid-to-stave-off-relegation-to-league-two
Feel for the guy, however If he made the comments like he did after our game I wouldn't want him there either if I was a player. Their football has been horrendous to watch tho, but just feel for him with the amount of injuries they've had throughout the season.
That's a shame really. He's done his best with the players he has had at his disposal, but if you lose eleven games on the trot you must understand that there is bound to be a reaction, either from the fans, or from the Board of directors, particularly if you are at grave risk of losing your place in League One. He's managed at five clubs either on a permanent basis, or in a caretaker capacity. Sadly, looking at his managerial record, it could well be likely that he might stuggle to get another job, especially as the popular trend now seems to be to employ a foreign Coach or Manager.
It is just another example of the stupidity of football club owners. At this level Chris Powell is a very good coach/manager and a decent bloke as well, not that that means anything these days. Southend's chances of staying up are not enhanced by the sacking of Chris Powell. The caretaker will inherit what is basically a Div. 2 squad because almost the whole of the first team is or has been injured. I sincerely hope I'm wrong, because they have to play Sunderland, but I cannot see how the caretaker can improve on Powell. Furthermore if they are relegated are they likely to recruit someone better than Powell? They will be a less attractive proposition.
Possibly fan pressure was part of it, but if that was the case, giving him the vote of confidence, and a statement explaining the reasons you've just given would surely been accepted by most fans. Problem with many fans is they want manager out without having a clue who's going to replace him, and with no guarantee of an upturn in quality.
I don’t mind Chris Powell but the “football” they played twice v us was anything but attractive! Dirty sods who rolled around like Neymar!
I think it's an outrage that another black manager has been sacked due to poor results on the field. Seriously though with whats happened in Montenegro how long before the race card comes out?
He had to go after no win in 11. It wasn't down to race like his mate thinks........ Powell has sent a in depth message to the fans, which is a nice touch and not something you see too often with sacked managers...... https://www.echo-news.co.uk/sport/17528944.chris-powells-open-letter-to-southend-uniteds-fans/
Evening people. Nice to hear some good comments about SCP (Sir Chris Powell as we know him). From a season ticket holder and away game participant, I can absolutely guarantee you guys this is the last thing the Majority of fans would have wanted. He was and still is a hero of Southend, and will always have a place in our hearts and roots hall. However, as you can see, 4 points from 33 was never going to do him any favours. The excuses were getting as little tiring, the injuries no longer accepted and his attitude on the touchline was not good. Despite the injuries, we still had players available who were/are more than capable of doing the job, but were playing not to lose, not playing to win. It was too defensive, no attack and week in week out there was too much tinkering. Powell was off the touchline at the first sign of trouble (sitting down in the second half) and at the last few games the manager AND team have left the pitch at away games without thanking the fans for travelling. With the club pushing for a new stadium, league 2 and the reduction in funds as a result of a drop were not an option. Sorry to say it, but the good of the club and it's survival was always going to be bigger than any manager. Ricky Duncan comes in as caretaker for now. He has a long history with the club and manages our academy which produces some real talent. So for now, lets see what happens. One thing, the rumour's of Steve Evans coming in have been widely rejected and a lot of fans would boycott if the club signed him. I think the club will look into the manager situation at end of season. The image in link below shows Powell during the 2nd half at Peterborough
I can't imagine having a manager who actually sits down after this season! I hope you manage to find as good as one as we have. Footballs a funny game!
This is another strange thing. That lass is the physio for our U23 team. Ben Clarkson has not been at the last couple of away games and nobody knows why. She has some wicked tatts down the full length of her legs actually.
