Have to say what a lovely set of fans, a credit to football. Think it’s the only time I’ve been in London and strangers (all Charlton) have struck up conversations on the bus, in the pub, and at the train station. Almost like being in Yorkshire. Some old-timers even gave us directions off of the bus and into the away section of ground. Seem a genuine set, down to earth, and didn’t milk their win. Shame they have an idiot up front and some classic shthousery from their keeper, and I do think players should be reprimanded more for winding up opposition fans. Good day out apart from the football..
Spot on with your comments about their fans! I loved listening to their chat on the train, this year and last - it is a family club. I would not have been pleased with Taylor or Phillips (goalie) if I were their management! Taylor was actually winding our fans up when a corner was being taken - wasn’t focusing on what was going off on the pitch (which, given the goal he’d already been gifted earlier, I was relieved about!) The second half, and particularly, the last 20 minutes made it better for me than last season when we lost there 2-0 and didn’t even compete. However, our performance in the first half has left me feeling very afraid for next Saturday. In the first half, we were very naive in the free kicks we gave away - they went down as though they’d been poleaxed every time they felt contact and the ref fell for it! Given our defending against set pieces, it was potentially a cheap goal for them every time. We stayed on our feet but were easily pushed off the ball. Never say never but we have a mountain to climb!
