Didn’t we lose an FA cup game at home 4-0 to Liverpool in the late 1980’s with an Ian Rush Hatrick? Could be on about that
I saw that same clip so Arabian Ian is correct he did say Liverpool. Charlie was probably alluding to the game in 1957 when he was playing for Doncaster Rovers. The Reds beat Liverpool 2-1 in the February at Oakwell in the 2 nd Division. Donny were in the same league and Charlie was always a Reds fan.
Yep...saw same...heard same. It was on at the beginning of the replacement program this afternoon. The FA Cup, Rewind: Quarter-Final Classics Part 2: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p0736hzg via @bbciplayer 40 seconds in on iPlayer.
After the first clip, Charlie then went on to say " Win or lose we'll ' ev a booze." Very funny man. Told the story before , when he presented our Duke of Edinburgh Annual awards in Featherstone. He welcomed everyone, then said " when they told me that tonight was about young kids making their way in the world, how could I refuse.? I love kids me. Mindst you, I dunt think a cud eight a full 'un."
Pretty sure he was asked to predict the score of the game where we lost 4-0 at home to Liverpool, and that was his response. I remember him being interviewed at the time. I went to the game and then walked home to Hoyland afterwards.
Probably right FWF. The Cup game against Liverpool was in March 1985. Charlie was born in 1927 so when we played that tie, he was 58 years old. The fact that in the clip, his hair is very grey would seem to confirm your observation.
I only remember it because my Dad had bought a *cough* Betamax video recorder a year or so earlier and was in the habit of recording anything Barnsley related on TV with his new toy. So I've seen that clip more than most which is why I remember it. The man at Cole Brothers/John Lewis told my Dad to stay clear of VHS and said that Betamax were the future.
For clarification and to end all doubt. Through sheer boredom last night I flicked through the channels and it was on bbc red dot. Found it amusing and just thought I’d share. Stay safe all.
There was no football related to the clip mate. Just Charlie saying that rhyme. Program then showed highlights of Everton and Ipswich and the replay. From 1985.
Actually from a quality point of view he was right...although the best system by a country mile was Video 2000, double sided tapes..great picture...perfect freeze frame and slow motion and a search facility that went to the start of every recording...but it came into the game too late.
