Who would play there if Scowen gets sent off and Hourihane picks up a knock at Preston. Morsy and .......?
Can only see Bree as a temporary stand in. When you compare the cover and options we have in most other areas, this is the area that worries me most. I really believed we'd add 2 centre midfielders before the deadline. 3 central midfielders in such a key position seems very light. And Scowen and Hourihane are both likely to get bookings with how many tackles they put in. Granted, it's only a few months to January, but an early injury and we'll be very stretched.
Perhaps Hecky and his staff believe we can cover the position with one of the younger lads? Personally, I haven't the foggiest idea. But I have every confidence in our Head Coach to oversee any issues, especially after what he's achieved so far.
Of course it's relevant. It's called contingency planning and something we should have considered before the window slammed shut. Last season we could have just got a 28-day loan in. This season we can't.
I think Hemsworth Tyke highlighted the same last night too, with the theoretical risk in November of losing Hourihane and Scowen during the week before the Wigan game, where Morsy would also be excluded from playing against the club we've loaned him from. The OP here, and HT view are fair enough. In my view, if it happened, we'd just have to deal with it as best we can - it's happened in the past (Hassell moved to midfield, Robin van der Laan played as a striker, Antony Kayak played up front etc). I've no idea whether we'd move players around, change formation (go 3-5-2 maybe) or whatever. But I don't think we can cover every eventuality, we've got 23 or 24 first team players, all of whom have to be paid regardless of whether they play, sit on the bench or aren't part of the match day squad. We once played away at Newcastle in about 1990, had Steve Cooper up front, played 5-4-1. With half an hour left, Cooper got a knock, came off, and we put a midfielder on (only 2 subs), and seriously finished the game 5-5-0, and got a point. We'll be fine.
It was a sarcastic response, the last we heard from Hecky was that he's nowhere near ready to return! In fact I don't think anyone actually knows 'what's up' with him - IMO Ryan Williams will be released next summer without having played any first team matches and or development squad games this season.
