Off to Budapest next week, any recommendations for places or bars to visit from you well travelled Reds fans. We are there for 3 nights
Wow - really jealous. Search for the ruin bars. Can’t remember any names but a great experience. Also visit at least one of the thermal baths but try to avoid the biggest ones. enjoy!!!
I was there earlier this year. Highlights for me were... Wandering arouind the castle region on the Buda side The shoes on the Danube Bank (powerful memorial to those killed by the facists in WW2) Central Market Hall (main food market in the city) Apparently the Spa's are pretty impressive but I didn't go. I'm sure you'll have a great time.
Buda side is nice, walk over the Chain Bridge, parliament buildings, Heroes Square, theres a huge historical spa in the centre where you can walk in to have a look around without paying. It was freezing when we went so it was amazing to see all these people acting like it was the middle of summer. Ferencvaros FC ground. I'm sure we passed a street called Istvan Ferenczi.
Staying near chain bridge, got a few sights we want to see. Cruise on Danube, Fisherman's bastion, labyrinth and hope to get to Puskas stadium.
The castle region across the river and the ruin bars at night are a must, proper little warrens of great bars. You can also walk up the big hill which overlooks the cityscape to the citadella, but the actual fort on top was still closed off for a major overhaul when I was there a few months ago, so it’s just fit the view/exercise!
Everything RonnieGlavinBS said cos he beat me to it...also the little local pastries shops are brill. maybe only 2 or 3 tables but really good if ya need a break.dont miss the river cruise..lvd it and v jealous...
And do the open top bus its brill and ya can get a dual tkt with the cruise... take the little funicular rail lift to the castle..
Went a few years back with wife and some friiends , beautiful city, but my story goes like this. On our last evening the six of us were sat in a lovely bar on the edge of a square, me with my Reds shirt on when one of the waiters started making a fuss about my shirt and rattling on when I caught the name Istvan Ferenczi. Another waiter came across to translate and it turned out the first waiter was good friends with Istvan and offered to bring him to meet us for a drink the following night. Sadly we had to decline as we were flying home the following morning. True story.
same experience - went at the end of December - locals seemingly impervious to the cold - massive open-air ice skating rink in the City packed with skaters. Overall a stunning city.
In terms of bars, other than the ruins and if you like stuff other than local lager, two very good Belgian bars directly around here (Budapest, Halász u. 1, 1011 Hungary) and “First Craft beer and BBQ” was excellent too (Budapest, Dob u. 3, 1072 Hungary)
Best city break I've had, planning on doing it again soon. Echo all the above and do the wine tasting in the castle cellars, excellent measures, came out very wobbly, the somelier is the star turn and the Tokaj and cheeses also amazing. I'd go back for this alone, but gets booked up quickly, we booked before we went. And check out the shisha bars
