As far as I'm aware, most footballers exploit tax loopholes to the max, but you'd have thought most top players would be able to afford an accountant who would keep them on the right side of the law.

Why do fabulously wealthy people (who "earn" more money in a year than most of us get in a lifetime) like these, feel the need to cheat the rest of us? I can understand anyone trying to legally keep their tax bill to a minimum, but this is outrageous. I hope they are sent down.

Funny how the HMRC who wrote off £25 billion in one evening can even dare go after a paltry million. Although i reckon the less you owe them, the harder they come for you

One would think so. It could be to do with EBTS which HMRC are clamping down on I suppose.

The thing is, this must be far more than just an "oversight". Even if you've not been paying for ages, as far as I'm aware you'll be given the chance to cough up. For it even to have become a police matter, some very significant jiggery pokery must have been going on, for a fair while. I'll be very interested to see what happens when this comes to court. I'd be extremely surprised if they're not going to be charged, as in cases like this it's unlikely to get to arrest stage unless the police believe they've got a decent chance of securing a conviction.

More to the point they ALL earn enough to keep them on the right side of morality. Whether it's legal or not to buy a home in Monaco and pretend you live there, to pretend your house is a business address which you just happen to live at, to have 99% of your wages paid in image rights to a company which then loans you the money or simply to ask a builder if there's any discount for cash in hand jobs with no receipt. Every single person who does it knows it's morally corrupt and every single person who does it can have absolutely no complaints at all when they fine there is no police on the streets, that people are dying in hospital corridors or that their pension is being reduced.

100% correct ST. Forgetting the illegal stuff, a lot of very wealthy people avoid tax and while 'legal' it is morally bankrupt. It has to stop and laws need to be introduced to make tax as transparent as possible.

I agree entirely. Though it doesn't stop me from being surprised that by the looks of things he's actually done something illegal rather than just morally dubious.

Let's not kid ourselves everyone would like to save a little tax as long as it's legal . Some of us would like to save tax legal or illegal .

Something needs doing because it's a disgrace. I can honestly say I've never attempted to avoid tax in any way.

See this video (4m 19 seconds) for the best little speech on tax

True. Though how stupid do you have to be if you're planning on not paying your taxes, overlooking the necessity of employing somebody who can assist you in doing that perfectly legally?
