Not making excuses, but here’s the facts as I know them...
The kids all showed remorse
They’re ‘kids’ so any financial penalty would be on their parents - not really a punishment for them.
A crowd funding campaign set up to replace the railway has raised about 3 times the replacement cost, including 100k from Rod Stewart as well as other high profile model railway enthusiasts.

It’s not all about the money though is it? It’s about the hours of love and attention that they had put in and maybe some inherited stuff.

They should be doing community service for it, at set times over the year. They’ll then learn about hard work and may also pick up some skills whilst doing it.

 

I don't know the age distinction in law cases between kids and adults, is it 15 and then 16?
I always say to myself that they could be 16 tomorrow.... where is the age difference then? It's just numbers sadly. I think I was the same person before midnight as after midnight.

The age isn't important as far as culpability goes (age of criminal responsibility is 10?) - my point is that fining a 15 yr old is a financial penalty on their parent - which is a flipping stupid penalty for everyone concerned.

 

Lets keep our hats on - I was responding to the complaint about the amount of the fine. I think they should be fairly punished - but increasing the fine is a daft move because they're kids and the fine wont be paid by them

What has that to do with liberals, lily livered or otherwise?
I'd suggest any liberal would want a justice system that is best geared to the greatest good for the population as a whole.
However it's far easier to underfund the whole of the social and correctional system and then blame the consequences on "Lily livered liberals"

 

I'd like to build a layout one day. I've got loads of 00 stuff I collected in my teens and early twenties that's just locked away in boxes. It's a labour of love building a layout. My Dad had an N Gauge layout and got into credit card debt so had to sell his stock and track work the whole shebang.

My heart goes out to those exhibitors. The punishment seems paltry but they are kids in the eyes of the law. Like another poster eluded to. It seems harsh to penalise their parents. Nobody twisted an arm up their backs.

 

My liver is heavily scarred, from years of enjoyment of the grape and the grain. I'm not sure lilies have been involved, other than admiration for the great Dennis.

It's a real **** thing for the culprits to have done. For me making them do community work makes a lot more sense. It's good that people, including Rod have put their hands in their pockets too to help.

 

Give them a job building a new layout.

 

I wish they'd take a sledge hammer to HS2.
