His early days were too gaudy for my liking.
I'm none too keen on his pink and blue skies and yellow grass.
His days before he died were more subdued and comfortable. Each to his own but i did like his later pictures.

Do you find though Mr Badger that because his scenes are kind of invented (i.e. out of his head and not based on a picture, or what's in front of him) that they appear soulless?

Don't doubt his technique for a moment Mr Lil. But would the picture represent anything you could have an affinity with?

I've not seen tonight's episode, but I always find them entertaining, relaxing and quite therapeutic. There has been one or two that haven't been to my personal taste, although they certainly don't reflect negatively on my views of his painting abilities.

I wouldn't disagree there. I think his painting abilities are outstanding. And his patter projects an effortless style which suggests an artist at ease with his technique and what he does. But what I'm saying is that his subject matter leads to finished paintings which while technically very good would leave me less than excited to have one hanging on my wall. Now if I was in the league of affording an original Ashley Jackson....................

They may be out of his head but he did live in Alaska where a lot of the scenes and landscapes originated. Yes they may appear soulless but like anyone who has to repeat the same type of picture ad nauseam it probably does seem lifeless.
But then what was going on in the head of Dali or Picasso?
I couldn't do it so I just sit back, relax, chill out and watch someone who can. It's lovely how it makes you feel after 30 minutes.
But I must admit that his later-life skies, mountains and water were so different, and in my eyes better, than the early ones. He simply developed.

I prefer oils to water colours and love landscapes. Bob Ross ticks all the boxes for me.

I said the same thing about his development. In particular, when painting mountains with his knife as opposed to using, say, a fan brush.

I have always liked the landscape paintings by David Dipnall.
Very, very English and superbly detailed.
    Have you heard of him?

Not a big fan of Bobs, I like loose paintings as they give your brain some work to do.
In Australia there is a tv program called colour in your life. The episodes are on YouTube and this episode has three of my favourite painters doing one picture. Joseph and Alvaro being my faves. enjoy
