I reckon Watford will be suited by simple, effective football. Nowt wrong with playing football in the right areas and playing to your strengths.
Val's one of the best Head Coaches I've ever seen at Barnsley and wish him nothing but success at Watford. Apart from when we play them next season, of course.
It's a no brainer for any manager really (unless one already has a stable job) because he either does well, gets a pay rise & other clubs come sniffing around him, or, he doesn't do well, sacked off real quickly with a nice wedge of dolla dolla bills and it won't have any effect on his chances with other clubs, because as you mention, everyone knows it's a basket case of a club!
I think the biggest disappointment for me about Val's departure, was that we didn't get to know for sure if he did have a so called plan B after all. And whether the rest of the Championship teams and managers had found him out by then, like Swansea/Steve Cooper seemed to have done. We call that a one off season, but that suggests we'll never be challenging for promotion to the Premier league, ever again!!.
If he doesn't have a good pre-season he'll be gone. Watford don't hang about do they. Lose to Arsenal U-21s in July and he's mincemeat.
