Never seen a ground as full as the Dell on tonight's episode - Saints v United, cup tie, 1977 (Greenoffs et al). And yet to see a half decent pitch on any of the programmes. Most complete puddings.

I've yet to see any excellent passing football. I think the standard is miles better today.

Terrible quality to the pitches, tackling from behind legal and sometimes brutal, passing back to the goalkeeper allowed. There's no doubt in my mind players from that era would revel in the style of football today. Their fitness levels would be increased, with diet also playing a major part. Talented players from that time would still be talented players today, in my opinion.

I think some of the players would transfer more easily than others to the modern era. I liked Mick Channon at the time and I think he'd be quite a success for a top club today. Given the state of the pitches I'm actually surprised anyone try to play football. They're unbelievably bad. Osgood also looks a cut above.
