    • Barnsley Vs. Peterborough United - Mon, Apr 21 2025, 15:00
The Reds return to Oakwell this Easter Monday as we prepare to entertain Peterborough United in a Sky Bet League One clash.

It’s a quick turnaround for the Reds off the back of Friday’s narrow defeat away at Leyton Orient, and they will be looking to bounce back at the first time of asking to finish the remaining three games of the season on a high. Friday’s fixture saw an impressive showing from Stephen Humphrys, with the forward picking up a brace, whilst Davis Keillor-Dunn bagged his 16th league goal of the season.

Peterborough United currently sit in 17th place in the Sky Bet League One table but are sure to be in high spirits coming off the back of an impressive Wembley victory against Birmingham City to clinch the Vertu Motors Trophy for the second season running.

In the opposite dugout will be the vastly experienced Darren Ferguson. The 53-year-old Scotsman has 18 years of experience managing within the EFL and he is currently serving his fourth stint as Peterborough United Head Coach. Son of the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, Darren came through the ranks at Old Trafford, eventually making his debut in 1990. Ferguson went on to make a further 27 appearances for the Red Devils before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he spent five years before making the switch to the Netherlands to represent Sparta Rotterdam. Ferguson would also go on to spend a successful eight years at Wrexham, in which he made 310 appearances and picked up 51 goals. The Scot captained the Welsh side to promotion to Division Two in the 2002/03 season, as well as helping the Red Dragons win the Football League Trophy in a 2-0 win in which he grabbed the second against Southend United in the 2004/05 season. During his first full season in management, Ferguson steered Posh to a second-place finish in Sky Bet League Two, this success was achieved the very next season as he guided Peterborough to back-to-back promotions, finishing second in Sky Bet League One during the 2008/09 season. A disappointing spell at Preston North End followed in which Ferguson was dismissed after less than a year. Ferguson then returned to Posh and guided them to another promotion, this time through the playoffs, beating Huddersfield Town 3-0 to return to the Championship. A spell at Doncaster Rovers was next, it wasn’t immediate success for Ferguson as Rovers were relegated to Sky Bet League Two during his first season, but they bounced back the following season, achieving promotion. A couple of stints back at Peterborough over a six-year spell including a promotion to the Championship as well as a relegation now brings us to the present day.

The reverse fixture earlier this season was a memorable 3-1 away day victory for the Reds. A Corey O’Keeffe long throw into the box caused confusion throughout the Posh defence, which resulted in the ball ending up at Donovan Pines’ feet and the American provided a tidy finish to put the Reds ahead. A well-worked corner routine doubled the advantage minutes later, with O’Keeffe teeing up Davis Keillor-Dunn on the edge of the box and the forward man made no mistake in applying the finishing touch. Malik Mothersille pulled one back for the hosts from the penalty spot to set up a nervy closing fifteen minutes, but the game was settled when Jon Russell picked up the ball in midfield and drove forward, before delivering a sumptuous strike from twenty yards to secure all three points on the road.

    Stats:

Within their last five league fixtures, Posh have won one in a thrilling 4-3 victory away at Crawley, drawn one away at Stockport County, and have lost three, falling short to Birmingham City, Northampton Town and Reading.

The outstanding performer for Peterborough United this season has been Kwame Poku, the tricky winger has picked up an impressive twelve goals and eight assists so far this campaign, mainly from the right wing.

The Reds have won four of their last five league games played on Easter Monday in Sky Bet League One, scoring two or more goals in each of those victories.

The visitors also boast an impressive Easter Monday record as they are unbeaten across their last nine league games played on Easter Monday, winning five and drawing four, since a 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest in April 2012.

    Key Quotes:

We’ll be approaching it with real detailed planning, with good training to get ready for the game. There's three games left, and I want to build on the last result at Oakwell, make it a real difficult place to go for teams, and that’s got to start on Monday. - Conor Hourihane (Head Coach)
