    • Mansfield Town Vs. Barnsley - Sat, Mar 15 2025, 15:00
Reds captain Luca Connell spoke to the media ahead of Mansfield Town vs the Reds on Saturday afternoon in Sky Bet League One.

    On departure of Darrell Clarke.

It's never nice to see anyone lose the job, as much as the gaffer has took the hit on this one, I think the players have to look at themselves as well. It's not just the gaffer for why the club weren’t doing well enough, and why we weren't performing on the pitch, so we've got to look at ourselves as well, but it's football that happens, and we’ve just got to move on as quick as we can now with fresh start.

    On the season overall.

I think there's a lot of factors. I don't think the playoffs are a write off, we've got ten games with a fresh start to just give it a good bash and see if we can get in fifth or sixth. There's a lot of things that have gone on behind the scenes and stuff like that, which not everyone knows the facts of. We're just focusing on what we can do on the training pitch, what we can do on the pitch, and hopefully we can turn things right in the last ten games.

    On tactical uutlook this season.

Sometimes the gaffer was rolling the dice, we had to try different formations because the ones weren't working, but that's down to us as well. We're the ones on the pitch, if we see something, we have to fix it as well. But there's no doubt about how the staff work behind the scenes, we went into every game with a good, clear game plan, but if we weren't executing that, maybe the gaffer tried something which we hadn't worked on all week, and maybe it looked a bit unorganised, but we've got to do that to try and win games. There are games that he's rolled the dice, and we've ended up winning.

On the quick turnover this week.

Yeah, it’s a completely different week, now we've got a meeting soon with Conor, he’s obviously got it so it's a good opportunity for him, all the staff are still here, so not a lot changes, but we've just got to listen to what Conor wants now and see what he wants for the weekend.

On Conor Hourihane as a Coach.

I think if you ask anyone in the changing room how hard Conor works, they’d only have good things to say, and obviously he was the set piece coach under Darrell, so I think on the set pieces, we've done quite well, so you can see how hard he works. So it's good for him to get the opportunity, and so I think if he works that hard with everything else, there's no reason why it can’t work.

On what approach Conor will take.

It's for us all to find out, obviously it's Conor's first job in coaching, so no one knows what he's going to be like, but it's exciting to be working under him, and especially for me, because I've been working quite close to him all season, so it's good to be able to have him in charge and see where it takes us.

On the help he has received from Conor Hourihane.

There's a lot of things that obviously go on, on the training field, and stuff that people don't see and stuff like that, me and Conor have had a lot of meetings, about games and stuff like that because there's no secret that I haven't been, in my opinion, at my best this season, so I've been taking things to Conor, and he's been helping me and stuff like that, and just stuff all over really. It'll be good to work under him and see what he brings.

On his performance levels across the season.

I don't know, I don't think you can put your finger on anything specific, everyone has ups and downs and stuff like that, so hopefully we can turn it around the last ten games.

On the advice Conor Hourihane has given.

It's just been to stay positive, don't get yourself down, I think he knows that I'm my own worst critic, I always look at myself, look at the bad things I've done rather than the good things I've done. I think he was quite similar when he was a player, so he was just saying from what he learnt in his career, just make sure you're always positive, look for the good things as well, and just keep cracking on.

On the push for the Play-Offs.

Yeah, it's not going to be easy, that'd be a lie if anyone said that, and you know, it's a tough ask, but all we're going to do is go out for the last 10 games, and give it a good crack, and see what it brings at the end of the season.
