Barnsley FC Women were unable to produce successive home wins, as they fell to a 3-0 defeat against Chorley Women FC on the Oakwell Showcase Pitch.

Chorley took the lead after a minute, with Saffron Woodhouse converting a close-range finish past Reds’ keeper Becky Flaherty after a cross from the left flank.

The Reds attempted to stage a fight back, managing to enjoy the majority of possession in the ten minute period after they initially went behind. After 15 minutes, Barnsley skipper Charley Evans came close to levelling the scoring, rifling a shot from 30 yards out which was directed wide of the target.

Two minutes later, Lauryn Wilcock whipped a cross in from the left wing, which was parried by the Chorley stopper into the path of Ruby Jex-Oldfield. However, the midfielder was only able to direct her follow up effort over the crossbar.

After 19 minutes, Chorley doubled their advantage, taking advantage of a defensive melee to get behind the Barnsley defensive line to score inside the eighteen-yard box.

Following this setback, Barnsley continued to battle for a goal, and almost pulled one back in the 21st minute, when the forward Lissa Woodhouse cut inside from the right flank, hitting an effort from a tight angle which curled past the post. Four minutes later, Betty Cheetham attempted a powerful effort from 30 yards out, which the wing-back could only direct high and wide of the target.

Woodhouse came close once more in the 33rd minute when Gregory found her in space close to the penalty spot, however the official’s flag denied her the opportunity to score the Reds’ first goal of the afternoon.

As half time approached, Chorley tripled their lead from a counter-attack, with Molly Wood managing to round Flaherty and finishing into an empty net, ensuring that Barnsley FC Women went into half time looking to overturn a three-goal advantage.

HALF TIME: Barnsley FC Women 0-3 Chorley Women FC

Jess Horsley’s side looked to find their way into the game as the second half began, with the first fifteen minutes after the restart being a relatively cagey affair. In the 60th minute, skipper Evans again hit a shot from distance on the volley, but her 30-yard effort skated past the post.

A minute later, Evans responded to a Chorley counter with an outstanding interception on the halfway line, before directing a targeted through ball into the path of Cheetham, who was denied by the smothering arms of the Chorley stopper.

Gregory came close to pulling one back in the 68th minute, creating space for herself on the left flank, before cutting inside and beating her marker, only for the opposition ‘keeper to collect her speculative shot on the edge of the area.

In the closing stages of the game, the Reds looked to stage a late fight back, with Jex-Oldfield working well on the right side of midfield to float a cross into substitute Louise Biggins in the area, however the forward was unable to control her shot from close range and the ball went out of play.

With two minutes to play, Biggins delivered a diagonal pass to Gregory in the eighteen-yard box, however, she was unable to get her body around the shot and saw her effort blocked by an opposition defender.

Despite this positive late display, Barnsley FC Women were unable to produce any further chances in the late stages of the game, and as such fell to a home defeat.
