As we approach the upcoming fixture against Rotherham, Barnsley FC will host a special Remembrance Ceremony at Oakwell Stadium to honour the servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives for our country. The ceremony will take place before kick-off, with members of the Barnsley and Rotherham squads, match officials, and representatives from the British Legion’s Barnsley Division all participating. Supporters are encouraged to join us in respectful silence and applause as we pay tribute to the fallen. Procession and Ceremony: The ceremony will proceed as follows: 7:07pm - Formation of Standard Bearers Veterans bearing standards form up at the side of the pitch, setting the stage for the formal ceremony to begin. 7:09pm - Wreath Laying Ceremony The wreath carriers, accompanied by the bugler, proceed to the centre circle and position themselves on the side closest to the East Stand. Wreaths are solemnly laid on either side of the centre spot by the President of the British Legion and Paul Goose, who then join the officials to stand by their side. 7:10pm - Reading of For the Fallen The President of the British Legion reads For the Fallen, with the resonant lines: > "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: > Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. > At the going down of the sun and in the morning > We will remember them." The bugler, John Hopkinson, begins the ‘Last Post’ as the final words of the poem are spoken. 7:12pm - Minute’s Silence Following the final note of the ‘Last Post’, the referee’s whistle initiates a minute of silence. Supporters are invited to join in this moment of reflection to honour those who served and sacrificed. 7:15pm - Kick-Off The match officially begins as Barnsley FC and Rotherham take to the field, united in honouring our shared history and those who gave all. We invite all attendees to join us in this moving tribute and show their respect for our fallen heroes. We will remember them. Continue reading...
