Big Lil will no doubt correct me, but it looks like Frank Sharp taking a throw in to Jimmy Seal, with Dave Booth in the background. Opposition Blackburn Rovers.
Which means it was from the home game from the 1971/72 season. We ended being relegated to the old Fourth Division.
Goalless draw. Relegated on goal average - our inability to score and inability to turn draws into wins cost us dearly.
A team that contained the likes of Gerry Stewart, Barry Murphy, David Booth, Eric Winstanley, Les Lea, Frank Sharp, Jimmy Seal & Alistair Millar should never have scored so few goals or be anywhere near the relegation spots. Which is why I always maintain John McSeveney was the worst Barnsley manager ever.
He does have some strong competition for that title though Kev - (dis)honourable mentions must go to Steve Parkin, Nigel Spackman and Jose Morais
I agree. But, for me, the style of football, results and lack of victories under McSeveney were the worst I've ever seen. The three gentlemen you mention were all extremely poor, though.
Remember before the away end was developed. Tv camera positioned on top of some dodgy looking scaffolding.
Yes, Mr McSeveney had a lot to answer for. He had some half decent players at his disposal there so we should never have been relegated. On the other hand having good individual players is no guarantee of success as we all know. There has to be proper team spirit and those qualities seem to have been lacking at that time. Poor management, poor coaching? Dark days, very low crowds and not much to look forward to. Luckily Allan Clarke came along a few years later and the blue touch paper was lit
You wonder sometimes how secure that gantry at the top of the kop was. It looked very flimsy from a distance and it was in a very vulnerable place with all those away fans likely to tip it over, just for a laugh like.
I’m sure I’ve seen that photo before in clearer definition. If its the one I’m thinking of there are three generations of my family on it - me, my dad, my uncle and my grandfather.
