Whilst I can see why singling players out on skin colour might be deemed as racist I think the other thread in acknowledging the contributions of black players to Barnsley over the years was fair enough especially in the context of the documentary mentioned and the sad passing of Cyrille Regis. It isn’t so much singling out as it is remembering and acknowledging contributions made.

We can’t really get on a high horse when our own fans were routinely making monkey chants and throwing bananas prior to Winnie Campbell becoming a regular; other clubs have had racist behaviours much more recently.

A similar forum to this attached to the club website was closed down due to racist comments regarding Uriah Rennie. (As if he didn’t provide enough material for his colour to ever have even been brought up). That was a horrible episode; but time has moved on even since then.

But there weren’t too many clubs playing black players in the early eighties, so having Winnie Campbell come into the side stood out a little in the third division, though we were nowhere near the first club to have black players.

We were also amongst the first clubs to have a black manager in Viv Anderson; appointed the same summer as Keith Alexander getting the permanent Lincoln job. (There was a bloke at Rochdale in the sixties who is often forgotten and was the first in the football league, though he wasn’t full time pro apprently). We haven’t exactly blazed a trail but we have contributed in a small way to improvements in equality I hope.

But, best black player, dyer. White? Didn’t see enough of Glavin personally, Hignett wasn’t here long enough to eclipse Redfearn imo, in terms of product and maximising his ability rather than on pure talent.

In a discussion about best players generally, for his consistency and reliability Bruce would be in the top ten or so though I’m not sure whether he’d be in the all time 11 of everyone. I think he’d get in mine.
