Just watched highlights of this match. Oakwell absolutely packed to the rafters, we won on penalties , you would think we'd won the champions league from the reaction of the crowd. It's how football should be, full of passion on and off the pitch. I feel for our young supporters these days. We give them nowt to support.
Yeah, but that wasn't typical of us to be fair. I was playing for the supporters club around that time and travelling all over. We were mostly poor away and better at home, but our average gates weren't great. My son is 23 now and I started taking him around 2002, he's had trips to Cardiff, Wembley and seen us beat Liverpool and Chelsea in the cup. From 82 to 96 it was pretty uneventful watching the reds really.
I was at the 6th round replay against Leicester in 1961. No floodlights then an afternoon kick off. We fortunate from Holgate Grammar were given a half day holiday to go to the game. An unofficial attendance was 40k+. Lost 1-2. WE were robbed of an equalising goal by Ken Oliver when Gordon Banks clawed his header from over the line, no goal line technology then. Great game. Leicester went on to the final where they lost to Spurs 2-0. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?...FB30F2988DCB862C5AA8FB30F2988DCB862&FORM=VIRE
A game I will never forget, My Grandad passed away the day before and me and my Dad had tickets for this. I was only 14, after some debate we decided to go. Full time was one of the very few times i have ever seen my dad cry, talking about how his Dad took him down to Oakwell for the first time.
