Not trying to be negative about the market but why do people travel on coaches to visit it? What does it have that others don't? All I see is a few fruit and veg stalls which are similar everywhere, a small half empty meat section and then a lot of random stalls that don't really sell anything unique.

Am I missing something as to what makes it a day trip location?

Some places don't even have markets anymore and ours was always quite big so it might be that

Barnsley market is legendary. People always came from miles around. From as far as York and Lincoln, according to ar Dad. Kids don't know their history, cos it's been messed about with so much.

    Seen coaches from Sunderland.

As Mr C said, it's long been an attraction for shoppers

Also not trying to sound negative, but it could also be a shoplifter destination as well. Take a bus from another town, not known to local police. Not going to return anytime soon.

Probably because it's cheap, that wig stall is quite famous as well.

I only go because the fruit and veg is cheaper and usually better quality than supermarkets.

Take it you've just read the latest Better Barnsley email? Someone on here, a stall holder mentioned the buses that come form all over the country, l think it was Darfield Tyke/Red. He said they had quite a few every week, where do these buses park if they're coming in so many numbers? Is this sustainable? l only see old folk doing this type of thing and the town centre project team do seem to be putting all their eggs in one basket with the markets, l'd be concentrating on getting the big names back into the units and trying to attract the crowds that flock to Meadowhall. Not knocking it mind, we've switched our meat & fruit shopping from the supermarkets to the town centre market to support them.

We moved down to Nottingham in March. Talking to a neighbour and he said they used to regularly go to Barnsley market

Yeah it is me mate, you'd be quite surprised how many coaches do come in. They used to drop off on the college road near the courthouse and the busses would then move up to the relief car park at the metronome. I also agree the town needs to pull some big names in, it would benefit us all but unfortunately it's a struggle getting big stores nowadays into town centers due to the success they have by setting up at retail parks. I know it costs more to rent the old HMV shop than what it does to have 4 times the floor space for a new unit at cortonwood (no idea what the rates are like but still)
