My recollection was that Chelsea were at a low ebb at that time but I've just checked and they gained promotion to the old first division, winning the second division title as champions, 17 points clear of Manchester City. We finished 7th, just outside the playoffs, on 74 points. Some result that!

I'm perhaps guilty of remembering things through rose-coloured spectacles but football was a much better game then than now. Fairer, more equal, not determined solely by money and as a result much more competitive and enjoyable. Interestingly, in Division One were Forest (3rd), Norwich (4th), Derby (5th), Coventry (7th), QPR (9th), Millwall (10th), Wimbledon (12th), Charlton (14th), Wednesday (15th), Luton (16th), 'Boro (18th & relegated). How times change. Doubtful that some of those teams will ever get back to that level.

I couldn't believe what we were witnessing that day. Great game.
Compared to last night, the gap in class, is positively yawning.

The evil that was Peter Nicholas and Graham Roberts.

Yes. Money, Money, Money in the rich man's world.

I'm not a fan or a major critic of our new owners, jury still out for me, but it seems like if they do have a pot to piss in they haven't parked it on "Grove Street".

Loved football back then. We were marvelling at having a £250k strike force of Cooper and Currie. How times have changed!

Wasn’t that the game when Roberts “did” Gwyn Thomas?

I thought it was actually Peter Nicholas who did it, they both seemed to go in at him at the same time. I wasn't sure if it was the league game rather than the cup game, but the time of year for an FA cup game tends to fit.

I think both ended up getting sent off in the game he got injured, whichever one it was.

I knew you'd get your scrap book out ;-)

I was but a young un at the time... though probably still old enough to get a game in our squad these days ;-)

What a memory you have Lil. I remember Aggies header well. My son and myself were behind the nets on the Ponte and watched it leave his head until it hit the rigging. Until I saw that clip, I'd forgotten the size of the crowd that day. They were very happy times to be a Reds supporter.

Back then we always seemed to get much bigger gates in the cup.
