My "ancient" iphone 6 is now basically obsolete. So in spite of the fact it works, I am unable to access stuff because Apple have cut off all the updates and so apps stop working. V annoying, as I don't really need a new phone - other than because Apple are pretty much insisting on ruining my existing one. e.g. I can't access sites like Amazon, you tube now, and some Apps just won't load onto my phone. Any way of avoiding this nonsense? I hate buying stuff when I don't really need to. Is it the same situation with Samsung Huwawei etc?
I'd say by and large, the situation is probably worse with Android. Most manufacturers only support their devices for a couple of years. They will still work and run most apps but won't get security fixes. This is especially true of the cheaper brands.
Obsolete tech will always cease getting updates at some point, it's just not cost effective to have multiple teams creating patches for numerous ancient phones and OS's. It's probably safer to just upgrade to a new phone as well, when the security updates stop for older handsets you're leaving yourself wide open... And yeah, it's pretty much the same with Android stuff too.
Apple are the worst for building in obsolescence; but I don’t think they’re unique. If I were you I’d look for a used iPhone from about 3 years ago. Much cheaper than ‘new’, an interface you’re comfortable with and it’ll last 4 or 5 years then you’ll be in the same boat.
Funnily enough I had a Samsung I was ok with - the reason I ended up with an I Phone was because Samsung wanted to charge me more on the contract to keep my existing phone! Have done away with contracts now - so thinking of buying a reconditioned phone from Giffgaff.
Always find it a bit weird how Android fans criticise Apple for OS support. Android hardware/OS compatibility is notoriously awful. Loads of reasons to consider Android, but long term OS compatibility ain’t one of em.
That's a issue. Governments want their populations to be greener but then manufacturers force people to bin perfectly good equipment as they CBA keeping older products working right, thus forcing people to spend cash on newer stuff.
30 GB data, unlimited international calls, freedom to install thousands of apps where you don't have apple strangling you. 9 quid a month Smarty
Not a lot you can do but Apple keep updating OS for at least 5 years on any phone. Android can be as little as 2. There comes a point when the phones won’t perform so well on newer operating systems and so Apple stop providing updates. The phones still work but unfortunately app developers drop compatibility with older op systems. As long as the old app still works that’s fine but then they force you to upgrade. I just had to replace a first gen iPad Air for exactly that reason. It was 7 years old and various apps had stopped working though many still did. No real solution I’m afraid but Apple is better than android on this issue
Daughter was telling me today, her new iPhone won’t work with her iPhone watch but her old phone will. She said she has been told the watch tech is too old. Is this for same reasons (apps that power them) do you know?
I bought my Samsung J3 five years ago. I paid £120 for it and it's still going strong. Cheap and cheerful, that's me. To be fair, I don't do anything clever with it... BBS, a bit of online shopping, photos, music player, tv guide... and I rarely connect to the internet unless I'm at home using wi-fi.
No idea sorry. I’ve got an Apple Watch but it’s only last years so it still works fine with my phone. Guess they drop support in the same way though
I'd suggest getting one of the budget Android phones. Realme, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola and others all offer great value for around £200. One of those with a SIM only contract is great value and easily upgradable if any significant tech upgrades make the existing phone outdated (not that I've ever hit that stage as yet).
Planned obsolescence. Remember when you used to be able to take the back off a smartphone and replace the battery? They soon realised that was bad for business.
I've done that for years, which I know will be of no surprise to you!! Never paid more than £200 for a handset and currently have a Moto G Pro (which was on offer at £199 at the time of purchase). Does everything I need it to.
