Central defender signs a new contract running until the end of the 2018/19 season. We are delighted to announce that Angus MacDonald has today signed a new contract with the Club which will see the 24-year-old defender remain at Oakwell until the summer of 2019. Since signing from National League side Torquay United last summer, the 6’ 3” tall commanding defender has been a revelation for the Reds, clocking up 30 Championship appearances in his first season at the Club. The English defender, who is also eligible to represent Scotland through his grandfather, scored his first goal for the Reds in an FA Cup Third Round Replay against Blackpool in January as he continues to impress the Oakwell faithful. On securing the services of MacDonald for a further two seasons, Barnsley Head Coach Paul Heckingbottom commented, “When Angus first joined the Club last summer he was challenged to prove that he has what it takes to make the step up and play regularly in the Championship. He has certainly done that and he is now demonstrating week in, week out that he belongs at this level. Angus has worked exceptionally hard to cement his place in the team and his performances have played a big role in our success this season. Something to be positive about! Not meaning that as a slight towards anybody, just genuinely chuffed at the news. Been a bit grim on here recently, let's hope there's more to come. You reds.
At the current rate that's another 6 own goals then...... No criticism, I like the lad, just a bit of irony......
This is how daft we are getting on here. People thinking that praise should be lavished on the club for offering a new contract to one of its players currently in contract. It's like praising Northern Rail when one train turns up on time.
So let me get this straight - we should criticise the club for not doing certain things well, but we shouldn't praise them for doing things well? Got it! Shall we stop cheering goals as well? Or applauding a good piece of play?
Excellent news, I'm a big admirer of our CB pairing. But I think the club could have secured another year as part of negotiations. As quoted, he's here for two further seasons. Two further seasons from the end of this season yes, but wasn't he already contracted for next season? Effectively we've given him a 1 year extension? Wouldn't it be more beneficial long term to give a 2 year extension? I'd take a guess he's not one of the main earners so we could afford his wages if the worst happened and we were relegated to L1. He would have started next season in the last year of his contract without a contract offer (praise to BFC for acting upon this) But at the end of next season we'll have to review the situation again as he'll be going into that season with only 1 year left. Just seems like groundhog day! Don't mean to sound negative on the back of positive news but sometimes it's a tad frustrating.
Don't think I said that but let's not go overboard. This doesn't make up for the last two poor windows or prove any of the doubters wrong.
You could say it was implied. I would still suggest that a simple congratulatory post probably doesn't warrant accusations of being daft. I haven't seen any instance of lavish praise in this thread, just a few well dones and folk expressing their pleasure at having Angus tied down for an extra year.
Better than nothing but still only a one year extension like Davies was. At least his contract is slightly longer than it was but it's still a bit deflated that the feel good factor has dwindled enough that any contract extension is seen as brilliant no matter how small.
