I can see this being the first of many such cases. https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/may/21/this-is-unjust-amiens-president-relegation-ligue-1
Had a read through the EFL rules this morning https://www.efl.com/-more/governance/efl-rules--regulations/section-1----general/ relevant section is probably the definitions. Normal Playing Season’ means the period of the year commencing with the first League Match and, for each Club, ending immediately after the completion of the Club’s final fixture of the League Competition, excluding any Play-Off matches. and Season’ means the period of the year commencing on the date of the first League Match and, for each Club, ending immediately after the completion of the Club’s final fixture of the League Competition or, if the Club is participating in the Play-Offs, the final Play-Off match for that Club. reference also to the annual competition. ‘League Competition’ means the annual League competition for Clubs organised by The League. There isn’t anything that they can expressly rely on and I think there is a fairly strong argument of an implied term that the season must be completed (by playing football matches) before it can conclude and relegations and promotions can happen. the club must COMPLETE their final fixture for the season to be determined. they have just made up this ppg solution The stumbling block could be that there is something in the articles of association that says you have to be bound to majority vote, which I haven’t seen. Suspect there may be... this will all rumble on.
All clubs did complete their final fixture. Back in March. There were no matches that were abandoned part way through. The rules state they have to complete a specific fixture, the last one they play, not all scheduled fixtures. There is nothing in what you have reproduced that states scheduled fixtures cannot be abandoned before they are played. There is precedent for this already this season. League 1 clubs all had scheduled fixtures this season with Bury. The season does not continue until those fixtures are complete. They were abandoned. As are all remaining fixtures.
Interesting to see who the board members are, you wouldn’t have thought Derby, Bristol City or Fleetwood would vote for an early finish given their league positions.
I can understand that interpretation, but it is quite literal. it seems implicit to me that the season consists of the scheduled games and completion of the fixtures is determined by playing the football match. I think this method sets a very dangerous precedent, what happens next season if there’s a second spike ? I’m not suggesting complete abandonment- I’m suggesting the season needs to be completed. Date of that is irrelevant.
