They reckon Newcastle are eyeing up a 5 million bid in January for hourihane. With Aston villa, Wigan, celtic and rangers interested also.
Would snap their hands off at 5 million for a player who is likely to only play another 20 games for us from that point in time before leaving for nothing. That's £250k per missed game. I can't see it myself. Why would Hourihane agree to it when he can go for nothing 5 months later and take the signing on fee. He'll want to sit tight.
not as big, because they will have already spend £5m!. The point of leaving on a free is that you are in a position to negotiate a huge wedge because the club haven't had to pay to sign you. if this were in any way true, it would demonstrate just how utterly out of all notions of reality the world of football has got - £5m for a player who could be signed for nothing 20 weeks later - jeez.
The only reason newcastle will make that bid is if they fail to get promoted Connor could get a better offer in the summer and newcastle will miss out. 5 million isn't much to Newcastle to secure one of the best midfielders in the league who imo will be a regular in the premiership before long.
If that was his rationale he would have agitated for a move in the summer. He wants to see his contract out. If you are offered 200k signing on, for example, but could expect £1m if you are out of contract, for example, then the extra you can expect in the summer more than covers the 6 extra months on peanuts. **figures plucked out of the air to demonstrate the point
He'd be foolish not to take the chance of going to a bigger club if offered. What if he turned it down and then suffered a bad injury playing for us? He might never get the chance again. If he went I would say good luck to him and thanks
Re: if that offer is true... The cynic in me says he'll sign a pre contract agreement with Celtic in January meaning we'll get heehaw for him. He'll last about 1 year at Celtic playing about 15 games and then get transferred back to a 'largish' Championship club for a couple of million. The only way I can see him staying with us is if he gets seriously injured but then that didn't stop Butterfield leaving. Having said that, I didn't see us keeping Hammill in the summer so I know buggar all. Ultimately, we signed him for £300,000 and he helped us into the Championship and is well on the way to helping us stay there - he's more than replayed his transfer fee with the money we get from being in the Championship.
I believe Plymouth have a sell-off clause too, according to a friend of mine who's a PAFC supporter. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
A transfer fee in January could avoid a salary bidding war in July. Not that It probably bothers Newcastle
Double edged sword, not only would he strengthen Newcastle it would weaken 1 of the challengers. They won't let Armstrong stay past Jan either.
Alternatively if we're not a challenger they could leave him with us to enable us to take points from their challengers
If those clubs want Conor enough, they will find the cash ok in January. I think he could be a target for a number of clubs, as long as his form and opta stats hold up. If a team wants him, they will be prepared to fork out a transfer fee and a signing on fee in January and we will then acquire the wonderful Cameron McGeehan from Luton Town for half the money received and a bit to get Aaron Collins from Wolves if Adam Armstrong does not stay beyond January. Good deals!!
Stated same in another thread a few days ago that a team could make an offer for Connor to avoid free for all in June and risk losing out. Dint know much about McGeehan though.
