Bristol's xg was 0.03. I genuinely don't think I've ever seen a figure that low - they had one speculative effort from outside the box and nowt else. They could repeat that performance 33 times before they could expect to score.
They did well to reach nil today. We even offered them a mix up between Andersen and Collins and they still didn’t look like scoring
They hadn’t scored in over 8 hours I was reading their matchday thread and they celebrated their shot like we celebrate a goal. Apparently we were odds on to win and they were 3/1 and still their fans though it was poor odds as they had to score I almost felt sorry for them. They think get the next Magee wrong and they will go down. Noticed that they have 2 points less than Hull had at this stage last season We never even conceded a cornerand they had one shot and it was hardly a serious goal threat
Laughable that their commentary slagged their lack of goal attempts but niva mentioned our defending.. Sour grapes that..
It's a stat that calculates how many goals a side "should" have scored based on the quality of their chances. Examples being that shots from outside the box produce a low XG as statistically they are very unlikely to go in - whereas a penalty produces an XG of around 0.8, reflecting the quality of that chance. West Brom yesterday had an XG of 1.59, suggesting that they were very unlucky not to score and so I ended up swearing at the TV when they kept missing sitters costing me on my acca. So 0.03 suggests that Bristol basically didn't have a chance on goal - which they didn't. So the result was a fair reflection. It's a very useful stat when it comes to reviewing games.
I'd looked at the stats of their recent games. The game yesterday followed a similar pattern, with Bristol having few shots and less than 40% possession. It's been the same, since even before this poor run for them. They're in real danger I'd going the same way as Hull did last season. Even in their most recent victory, they were dominated by Huddersfield.
My mate’s an Hudds fan and he said they hit the woodwork 4 times against them. They’re a dreadful side who are in serious trouble if they don’t get the next managerial appointment right.
do you think the multi billion pound football industry just guess? or do they use some of the many stats available to help them?
Bit ignorant. How do you reckon this spreadsheet model works - just a shopping list based on making up names out of a Scrabble bag? Don't understand exactly how it all works myself, but it doesn't mean I can't appreciate we're seeing the benefits.
I’m afraid it’s only going to get ‘worse’. In the ‘good’ old days, all we knew about from a game we didn’t attend was who scored and who won. We now have enough data from games we didn’t see to build up a picture of exactly how the game was played. Though personally I prefer this, and can genuinely see me wasting hours in my retirement playing with football data just ‘for fun’.
To be fair they have been the same against everyone recently - our defence probably didnt play any better than any other game but their attack was by far the worst we have played this season
