On this weekend in 1971 we lost 0-2 in a Yorkshire derby v Bradford City at Oakwell. The result meant we were bottom of the table (Division 3) after 14 games with a record of won 1 drawn drawn 5 and lost 8. Strange symmetry with this season should we lose tomorrow. Those old enough to remember will recall that we were relegated at the end of the season.
My first full season as a proper reds supporter. Having started going the season before it’s amazing I didn’t give up then but at the time I didn’t know any better. With the benefit of hindsight McSeveny comes close to Schopp in terms of managerial ability.
Also, out of all the teams in that division at that time, 2 are now premier league teams, 3 are in the championship and the rest are in division 1,2 or non league so you could argue that over the last 50 years the club has done something right!!!
And mine...started partly in the season before and it became a part of what we did. funny though I don't remember being as bothered about results but maybe it was because it was a new exiting time becoming a teenager in 1970 and getting out in the big wide world with the lads...
I love reading old football pages and I remember that week clearly. Not for the Barnsley result or the Dundee United one but it was the day Partick beat Celtic 4-1 in the League Cup final. I was 15 at the time and remember delivering my papers listening to that game on my transistor radio.
You could be right mate. What I did notice was that there was 3 games going on in Glasgow that day. Celtic v Partick at Hampden Rangers v Motherwell at Ibrox Clyde v United at Shawfield It must have been fun in Glasgow city centre and rail stations that Saturday night
