One of the most outrageous fiddles ever perpetrated in English football ever. An absolute travesty. The bitterness of the decision was also heightened when rumours began to circulate that some of the delegates ŵith the right to vote, had been influenced by Arsenal offering a cash " bung", an accusation that was never substantiated of course.
I was discussing this with the Jr. Didcot Reds last week. Teams were balloted to decide on promotion as Division 1 was being expanded to 20 clubs. The Arsenal chairman an effective job lobbying other clubs. Arsenal had just moved to Highbury and needed 1st division football to help pay for it. They have never been relegated since.
Scandalous example of high level corruption among the big clubs and football’s “elite”. A while ago someone posted a link to an article someone had written following research into this incident. The article, written many years after the event, concluded there was no evidence of corruption. But of course that’s the point: there wouldn’t be any evidence to find because it would have been conversations on the QT, meetings in closed rooms, bungs, nothing in writing etc. Makes my blood boil.
To be fair, Tottenham have more right to be annoyed than us - they received the 2nd most votes Still a travesty, mind
Agreed. Tottenham finished bottom of division 1 and with the expansion of the division could have expected a reprieve. Had that happened, I would probalby have a grudge against Spurs rather than Arsenal. Does anyone think that had we gained promotion rather than Arsenal we would have maintained top flight status ever since?
I would say it's unlikely. Arsenal had the far larger crowds, hence the need for the new stadium, in a far more attractive location.
