I've just seen two swan like birds in the river Calder at Wakefield. However they had dark heads and the plummage of ducks. What were they?

Weird how I'd never seen one before. I was just on bus to Pontefract this morning and looked out of window as I was crossing bridge and thought wtf are those? :)

For years I was convinced this was a barnacle goose - there is a year-round resident on the local lake. Second year on the trot it has bred with a canada goose too.
